rasa-niṣpattiḥcomes the niṣpatti (the arising, the bringing-to-completion) of rasaरस की निष्पत्ति होती है
ko dṛṣṭāntaḥwhat is the illustration for this? — a question the bhāṣya at once puts to itselfइसका दृष्टान्त क्या है?
vibhāva-anubhāva-vyabhicāri-saṁyogāt — from the joining of the vibhāvas, anubhāvas, and vyabhicāri-bhāvas; rasa-niṣpattiḥ — rasa arises. ko dṛṣṭāntaḥ — what is the example?
This is the rasa-sūtra itself. From the coming-together of three things — the vibhāvas (the causes that stir an emotion), the anubhāvas (its outward signs), and the vyabhicāri-bhāvas (the passing moods that flit across it) — rasa is brought to completion. Notice the sūtra does not yet name the sthāyī-bhāva; that will be supplied as the argument unfolds. Bharata's own prose then asks: what is the illustration for such a thing?
This is the famous rasa-sūtra of Bharata (NŚ 6). saṁyoga = 'conjunction, coming-together'; niṣpatti = 'production, bringing-to-completion' — the exact force of both words is what the later ācāryas (Lollaṭa, Śaṅkuka, Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka, Abhinava) will fight over.

atra āha — here he replies; yathā hi nānā-vyañjana-auṣadhi-dravya-saṁyogāt rasa-niṣpattiḥ — just as flavour arises from joining condiments, spices, and ingredients; tathā nānā-bhāva-upagamāt rasa-niṣpattiḥ — so too rasa arises from the joining of the various bhāvas.
Here is the answer, and it rests on a pun that runs through the whole passage: rasa means both the flavour of a cooked dish and the aesthetic mood of a play. Just as flavour is produced when you combine condiments, spices, and base ingredients in the pot, so rasa is produced when the various bhāvas come together on the stage. The kitchen is the illustration; the stage is the thing illustrated. The single word rasa carries both feet of the comparison — that śleṣa is the point, not a decoration.
śleṣa on rasa: (1) culinary 'taste, flavour', (2) aesthetic 'mood, savour'. Bharata builds the whole doctrine on this double sense; keep both live.

yathā hi guḍa-ādibhiḥ dravyaiḥ vyañjanaiḥ auṣadhibhiḥ ca ṣāḍava-ādayaḥ rasāḥ nirvartyante — just as flavours like the ṣāḍava are cooked up from jaggery and other ingredients, condiments, and spices; tathā nānā-bhāva-upagatāḥ api sthāyinaḥ bhāvāḥ rasatvam āpnuvanti — just so the sthāyī-bhāvas, once joined with the various other bhāvas, attain rasa-hood.
Now the comparison is made exact, and a new term is quietly introduced. On the kitchen side: from jaggery and other base ingredients, plus condiments and spices, cooks turn out relishes like the six-part ṣāḍava. On the stage side: the sthāyī-bhāvas — the durable, foundational emotions such as love or grief — once they are joined with the various passing bhāvas, attain rasa-hood, that is, they become rasa. So the sthāyī is the base ingredient; it is the sthāyī that ripens into rasa.
sthāyī-bhāva = the 'abiding' emotion (rati, śoka, etc.) that underlies a rasa; ṣāḍava = a preparation of six flavours. The sūtra named only vibhāva/anubhāva/vyabhicārin; the bhāṣya now names the sthāyī as the thing that becomes rasa — the seed of the later dispute over what the sūtra left unsaid.

rasaḥ iti kaḥ padārthaḥ'rasa' — what does the word actually mean?'
ucyatethe answer is givenउत्तर कहा जाता है
āsvādyatvātbecause it can be tasted, relished — that is why it is called rasa ablative of ground: the name follows from its being an object of āsvāda (relishing)क्योंकि वह आस्वादन के योग्य है
atra āha — here he asks; rasaḥ iti kaḥ padārthaḥ — what is the sense of the word 'rasa'?; ucyate — it is answered; āsvādyatvāt — because it is something to be relished.
A word-question now: what does 'rasa' actually mean here? The answer is one word — because it is āsvādya, something that can be tasted, relished. That is precisely what makes it 'rasa': it is not a thing you merely know, but a thing you savour.
āsvādya = 'to be tasted / relished'; the etymology keeps the kitchen sense alive — rasa is named for the act of savouring, on the stage exactly as at the table.

And how is rasa tasted? By the same double picture. On one side: good-hearted men eating well-seasoned food relish its flavours and come away glad. On the other: good-hearted spectators, watching the sthāyī-bhāvas made vivid by the acting of the passing bhāvas — acting carried by speech, by gesture, and by sattva (the involuntary, from-the-heart signs like tears or trembling) — relish those foundational emotions and likewise come away glad. The diner and the spectator do the same thing: they savour, and joy follows. Mark the word sumanas, 'good-hearted' — only the fit, sympathetic viewer tastes rasa, just as only a willing eater enjoys the meal.
vāc / aṅga / sattva name three of the abhinayas (modes of acting): vācika (speech), āṅgika (bodily gesture), sāttvika (involuntary psychophysical signs — tears, horripilation). sumanas = 'well-disposed, good-hearted', the seed of the later sahṛdaya, the sympathetic connoisseur.

So the doctrine is settled: these are expounded as the nāṭya-rasas, the rasas that belong to drama. To seal it, Bharata says there are two anuvaṁśya verses — traditional couplets handed down to recapitulate the teaching. The first begins on the kitchen side once more: 'just as food that has been joined with many condiments, and those condiments joined with many ingredients...' — the sentence will finish in the next line.

anuvaṁśya = a recapitulatory verse 'coming down in the lineage', quoted to fix a settled point in memorable form. Here it restates the food-to-rasa comparison one final time.

The verse completes its food-half: people who know good food relish the cooked meal as they eat it. The rasa-half of the couplet — the spectators who in the same way relish the sthāyī-bhāvas — follows in the next line of the recap. Note the touch of bhakta-vidaḥ, 'those who know their food': again it is the discerning eater, matching the discerning spectator, who truly tastes.
Why cited: The anuvaṁśya couplet is adduced to fix, in traditional verse, the food-to-rasa comparison just argued — that as the food-wise relish a well-made meal, so the good-hearted relish the sthāyī-bhāvas as rasa.

Abhinava unpacks the second half of v31. The compendium was given in two forms — uddeśa, the bare naming-off of topics, and vibhāga, their fuller division. Having done both, Bharata now promises the next stage: to give the lakṣaṇa (definition) and the parīkṣā (critical examination) of each topic. That promise is carried by the words 'ataḥ param', 'from here on'.
Four technical stages of exposition are lined up here: uddeśa (concise listing) and vibhāga (division) belong to the saṅgraha already done; lakṣaṇa (definition) and parīkṣā (examination) are what is now promised.

sūtra-grantha-vikalpanam iti pāṭhaḥ — the reading is 'sūtra-grantha-vikalpanam'; sūtram sūtrakam lakṣaṇam vakṣyāmi — 'sūtra' means the terse defining-formula, which 'I shall declare'.
Abhinava first pins down the reading he is working from — 'sūtra-grantha-vikalpanam' — and then begins to gloss that compound word by word. 'Sūtra' here means the sūtraka, the compact defining-formula, the lakṣaṇa: this is what Bharata means when he says 'I shall declare'.
pāṭha = a specific textual reading; the commentator often records which pāṭha he follows before glossing it. A sūtra is a maximally terse formula; sūtraka is its diminutive.

Continuing the word-gloss: that one word 'sūtra' is made to cover the kārikā as well — the summarizing verse that packages a doctrine for memory. And the other half of the compound, 'grantha', means the bhāṣya, the running prose exposition. So 'sūtra-grantha' spans three genres at once: sūtra, kārikā, and bhāṣya.
Three classical text-forms: sūtra (terse formula), kārikā (mnemonic verse restating it), bhāṣya (prose that expounds and argues). Abhinava maps Bharata's compound onto all three.

Here Abhinava names the very engine of the chapter. The 'vikalpana' — the working-out that the bhāṣya performs — has a definite shape: it is ākṣepa plus pratisamādhāna, raising an objection and then settling it. That two-beat structure is exactly what parīkṣā, 'critical examination', means. So the word 'vikalpana' in the verse denotes precisely the parīkṣā, and that parīkṣā is what Bharata promised to deliver. This is the pūrvapakṣa-then-siddhānta method the whole rasa-discussion will run on.
ākṣepa = the objection (pūrvapakṣa); pratisamādhāna = the answering resolution (siddhānta). Abhinava equates vikalpana = parīkṣā = this objection-and-answer procedure — the frame within which Lollaṭa, Śaṅkuka, and Bhaṭṭa Nāyaka will each be raised and answered.

sūtra-vivaraṇa-svabhāvā tu kārikā sūtram api prakāśayantī — the kārikā, being by nature an unfolding of the sūtra, while lighting up even the sūtra; bahutara-ākṣepa-samādhāna-vyākula-śiṣya-janam sthita-pakṣa-nirūpaṇena upakaroti — helps the students bewildered by the many objections and answers, by laying out the settled position; iti bhāṣyasya paścāt asyāḥ pāṭhaḥ — therefore its placement is after the bhāṣya.
Why is the kārikā read after the bhāṣya, when its job is to explain the sūtra? Because the bhāṣya, with its many objections and rejoinders, leaves students in a tangle. The kārikā, whose nature is to unfold the sūtra and does throw light even on the sūtra itself, comes to their aid by laying out the settled view in a compact verse. So it is rightly placed after the bhāṣya — as the thing that gathers up its debates. The text of this sentence is damaged, but that is its drift.
The printed text here is corrupt (editorial marks '(naṁ)' and '(ra)' flag doubtful syllables), so the exact wording of the student-clause and 'sthita-pakṣa' is not secure; the general sense — kārikā placed after bhāṣya to settle the confused student — is clear.

Abhinava now bridges to the next verse. Having promised the threefold treatment — sūtra, bhāṣya, examination — Bharata wants to establish that it is the rasa-material, starting from its sūtra and running through its bhāṣya and examination, that must be taken up first. To lay the groundwork for that claim, he says 'tatra' — the opening word of v32.
parikara-bandha = 'tying up the retinue', i.e. assembling the supporting apparatus for a thesis before stating it; sūtra-prabhṛti = 'from the sūtra onward', covering the whole sūtra–bhāṣya–parīkṣā sequence.

A quick word-gloss on v32. 'Tatra', 'there', means 'among those topics — rasa and the others'. The 'eva' in 'rasān eva' is restrictive: rasa specifically, nothing else, comes first. And 'tāvat' is not about quantity here but about order — it means 'to begin with, first of all'.
avadhāraṇa = the restrictive/emphatic force of 'eva' ('just, precisely, alone'); 'tāvat' has several senses — Abhinava fixes it here as the sequential 'first'.

Abhinava glosses the verb itself, abhivyākhyāsyāmaḥ, 'we shall fully expound'. The prefix 'abhi-' he reads as 'from every side, from the very start'. And the exposition will proceed by dividing the material in a fixed order: first the sūtra, then the grantha (bhāṣya), then the parīkṣā (examination). That threefold order is how each rasa-topic will be handled.
The prefix abhi- is glossed as āditaḥ ('from the beginning') / abhitaḥ ('on all sides'), intensifying vyākhyā into a complete, ordered exposition.

Abhinava sets up the last clause of v32. Someone might object: 'Why should the order of the original list itself be trusted — why take rasa first?' Anticipating that challenge, Bharata offers a further reason for the sequence, introduced by 'na hi', 'for it is not the case that...'. The reason follows in the next sentence.

paryanuyoga = a challenge, a demand-for-justification; Abhinava treats 'na hi rasād ṛte...' as Bharata pre-empting an objection to why rasa is placed first.

Now the reason, in three strokes — this is pure Abhinava. First: strip rasa away, and the vibhāvas and the rest have no claim on the mind at all; there would be nothing worth explaining about them. Second: without rasa, the whole point of drama collapses — for drama's purpose is instruction (vyutpatti) carried in on the back of delight (prīti), and take away rasa and that delight-borne instruction never happens. Third, and deepest: once the spectators are turned toward rasa, they come to rest wholly in a single, dense, undivided experience whose very being is relishing (rasana) — and in that repose no separate component, no bhāva or vibhāva taken by itself, shows up in the mind at all. Rasa swallows the parts. That is why it must come first.
Key Abhinavan terms: vyutpatti = 'instruction, cultivation', drama's didactic fruit; prīti = the delight that carries it; rasana = the act of relishing; eka-ghana = 'a single dense mass' (undivided); viśrānti = 'repose, resting' — the aesthetic rest in which the connoisseur's awareness settles. The sāmājika is the audience-member, the fit spectator.

Abhinava presses the third point home. Take the whole class of vibhāvas and anubhāvas — even the insentient ones, the moonlight and gardens and such. None of them appears on its own. They shine forth only as sunk into one mental state: the pradhāna, the chief mental state, which bears the name sthāyin and which the other, transitory mental states wait upon and assist. In other words, every stage-element is lit up only from inside the dominant emotion. That is the ground for the claim that, absorbed in rasa, the mind never sees the parts standing apart.
The sthāyin is here defined as the pradhāna citta-vṛtti, the 'chief mental state', with the vyabhicāri-bhāvas as citta-vṛtty-antara, 'other mental states', that serve it. jaḍa = 'insentient': even non-conscious stage-objects (an ālambana like the moon) figure only as absorbed into the emotional state — a signature Abhinavan move.

Abhinava draws it together. From every angle that matters — the teacher who expounds the drama, the actor who performs it, and the spectator who receives it — the primacy belongs to rasa and rasa alone. That is why rasa was named first in the list, and that is why its definition, and everything that follows from the definition, must be taken up first. That is the whole point of the verse.
The three standpoints — vyākhyātṛ (expositor/teacher), naṭa (actor), sāmājika (spectator) — recur through Abhinava's rasa-theory as the three parties whose convergence establishes rasa's centrality. tātparyam = 'the intended upshot, the gist'.

Earlier the plural was used, 'the rasas'; here the singular, 'rasa.' Why the shift? This is the intent behind it: at bottom there is really only one rasa. In the drama it shines forth as the single sūtra — the one guiding thread that the whole play hangs on.
Abhinava reads the number-shift as doctrine: the many rasas are ultimately one (paramārthataḥ ekaḥ eva). sūtra here carries its plain sense of 'thread' as well as 'aphorism' — the one rasa runs through the drama like the thread on which everything is strung.

Having given the reason for the order — rasa taken up first — Bharata now states the defining aphorism on rasa: 'From the conjunction of the vibhāvas (the causes that awaken feeling), the anubhāvas (its visible effects), and the vyabhicāri-bhāvas (the passing feelings), rasa is produced.' Abhinava now turns to the sūtra: 'here, [on the view of] Bhaṭṭa Lollaṭa…' — and the great debate begins.
This is the celebrated rasa-sūtra of Bharata, the seed of the whole rasa debate. The clause 'atra bhaṭṭaṁ' breaks off mid-sentence: it opens the introduction of the first pūrvapakṣa, that of Bhaṭṭa Lollaṭa, which is set out in the atoms that follow. His view is not yet stated here, only announced.
