First, Bhaṭṭa Lollaṭa and the teachers before him read Bharata's rasa-sūtra like this. The 'conjunction' the sūtra speaks of is the conjunction of the sthāyin — the abiding emotion — with the vibhāvas, anubhāvas, and vyabhicārins. Bharata never names the sthāyin, but Lollaṭa supplies it: 'by implication' (arthāt) the conjunction is the sthāyin's. From that conjunction rasa is produced. This is the utpatti-vāda, the 'production' theory.
The text's -vyabhiḥ is a scribal shortening of -vyabhicāribhiḥ; the three named causes of the sūtra are vibhāva, anubhāva, and vyabhicārin.

tatra — of these; vibhāvaḥ — the vibhāva; sthāyyātmikāyāḥ cittavṛtteḥ — of the mental state that is the sthāyin itself; utpattau — for its arising; kāraṇam — is the cause.
Take them one at a time. The vibhāva is the cause that makes the sthāyin-mental-state arise. The 'mental state' here just is the abiding emotion (sthāyin); the vibhāva is what brings it into being.

And the anubhāvas the sūtra means are not the kind that are produced by rasa. Lollaṭa is careful here: some anubhāvas only show up once rasa is already present, but those are not what Bharata is pointing to as a cause.

Why exclude them? Because an anubhāva that rasa itself produces cannot then be counted as a cause of rasa — that would be circular. So the anubhāvas meant here are the ones that belong to the bhāvas, the mental states — signs that flow from the emotion, not from rasa.

Now an objection. The vyabhicārins — the passing moods — and some anubhāvas are themselves mental states, and they come and go; they are not present at the same moment as the abiding sthāyin. So how can they conjoin with it? The answer given: even so, they are meant here as belonging to the sthāyin in the form of vāsanā — the latent trace they leave behind. The sthāyin carries them as impressions even when they are not actively present.

An analogy backs this up. Even in the example given, among the several factors that together manifest a thing, one factor sits latent — present only as a trace — like the sthāyin; another is fully risen up and active, like a vyabhicārin. The mapping is: the latent factor stands for the sthāyin, the active factor stands for the vyabhicārin. What it proves is that something present only as vāsanā can still count as part of the working mix — so the transient moods, present as traces, genuinely belong. The text does not push the analogy further than this one point.

Here is Lollaṭa's conclusion. Rasa is nothing but the sthāyin itself, once it has been fed and thickened by the vibhāvas, anubhāvas, and the rest. Heighten the abiding emotion and it is rasa; leave it un-heightened and it is just the sthāyin. Rasa and sthāyin are the same thing at two intensities — this is the heart of the utpatti-vāda.

And where does this rasa reside? In both, Lollaṭa says, and in the full, literal sense — not by any figure of speech. It is really in the character represented, Rāma and the rest, and really in the actor who plays him. In the actor it arises by the force of anusandhāna — his putting himself imaginatively into the character's situation. The closing 'iti' marks the end of the statement of Lollaṭa's position.
mukhyā vṛtti (primary/literal function) vs gauṇī (secondary/figurative): 'lion' said of a real lion is mukhya; 'lion' said of a brave man is gauṇa. Lollaṭa's claim is the strong one — rasa is in the actor literally, as the real lion is a lion, not merely figuratively as the brave man is a 'lion'. anusandhāna is the actor's recollective joining of himself to the role.

The line runs: 'rati — the abiding emotion of love — has turned into śṛṅgāra by being joined with an abundance of beauty.' The point Abhinava wants is in the verb 'has become': the sthāyin itself becomes the rasa when it is heightened.
