रस, भाव, अभिनय, धर्मी, वृत्तियाँ और प्रवृत्तियाँ, सिद्धि, स्वर, तथा आतोद्य, गान और रंग — यह (आगे कहे जाने वाले विषयों का) संग्रह है।
Here Bharata gathers the topics his treatise will cover into a single list: the rasas, the bhāvas, the abhinayas, the dharmī, the vṛttis and pravṛttis, siddhi, the svaras, instrumental music, song, and the stage. This gathered heading is what he calls the saṅgraha. Abhinava will count the limbs of nāṭya out of this list in two different ways — his own five, and Kohala's eleven.
यह श्लोक आगे कहे जाने वाले विषयों की संक्षिप्त सूची देता है। रस, भाव, अभिनय, धर्मी, वृत्ति और प्रवृत्ति, सिद्धि, स्वर, आतोद्य, गान तथा रंग — इन्हीं का यहाँ संग्रह किया गया है।
A saṅgraha-kārikā: a table-of-contents verse naming what follows. Read as a bare enumeration it yields eleven items (rasa, bhāva, abhinaya, dharmī, vṛtti, pravṛtti, siddhi, svara, ātodya, gāna, raṅga) — Kohala's ekādaśāṅga count (c1.s4). Abhinava re-groups it into five limbs (c1.s2).
यह एक संग्रह-कारिका है — जो आगे आने वाले विषयों के नाम गिना देती है। सीधी गणना के रूप में इसमें ग्यारह विषय आते हैं (रस, भाव, अभिनय, धर्मी, वृत्ति, प्रवृत्ति, सिद्धि, स्वर, आतोद्य, गान, रंग) — यही कोहल का 'एकादश-अंग' गणना है। अभिनवगुप्त इन्हें पाँच अंगों में पुनः समूहित करते हैं।

Now Bharata defines the term kārikā. The meaning that learned men state briefly, in condensed form, leaning on the sūtra — that is to be taken as the kārikā, the verse whose job is to show the meaning. So the verse gives the lakṣaṇa (defining mark) of a kārikā, which Abhinava will then unpack word by word.

The little word 'ca' at the end of the verse, Abhinava says, works like 'iti': it marks 'and that closes the list.' On his own reckoning the limbs of nāṭya come to five — the three abhinayas, plus song (gīta) and instrumental music (ātodya).
यहाँ 'च' शब्द 'इति' के अर्थ में है। तीन अभिनय, और गान तथा आतोद्य — इस प्रकार नाट्य के पाँच अंग हैं।
abhinaya-traya, 'the three abhinayas', names three of the usual four modes of enactment (āṅgika, vācika, āhārya); the fourth, sāttvika — the seat of felt emotion — is set aside here, matching s3, which argues the actor does not really undergo rasa and bhāva.
अभिनय-त्रय अर्थात् 'तीन अभिनय' — सामान्य चार अभिनयों (आंगिक, वाचिक, आहार्य) में से तीन का नाम है; चौथा सात्त्विक — जो अनुभूत भाव का स्थान है — यहाँ छोड़ दिया गया है। यह s3 से मेल खाता है, जहाँ कहा गया है कि नट वस्तुतः रस और भाव का अनुभव नहीं करता।

Here is why rasa and bhāva are left out of the five limbs. If the actor actually felt them, then in playing a death-scene he would be really taken over by that state — and his sense of rhythm and timing (laya) would break down. Since neither happens, the felt emotion is not literally in him.
यदि नट सचमुच रस और भाव का अनुभव करने लगे, तो मरण आदि दृश्यों में वह उस अवस्था को यथार्थ मान बैठेगा और उसका लय (ताल) टूट जाएगा। इसी कारण रस और भाव को (नाट्य का सीधा) अंग नहीं गिना गया।

Two views are now on the table and must not be merged: Abhinava's own pañcāṅga (s2) and Kohala's ekādaśāṅga, which counts every item of the saṅgraha-list — rasa and bhāva included — as a limb.

A difficulty is raised about the eleven-fold reading: are these items just what Bharata has already collected elsewhere, or not really settled in his scheme at all? The point is why the list should appear again here.
यहाँ पाठ भ्रष्ट है, इसलिए अर्थ निश्चित नहीं। शंका इतनी है कि जो भरत के द्वारा पहले से संगृहीत है, उसे पुनः पृथक् अंग क्यों गिना जाए।
The text of this segment is corrupt (the doubled 'na tu … na tu'); the sense given is tentative and is fixed by the answers that follow in s6 (the Audbhaṭas) and s7 (Bhaṭṭa Lollaṭa).

Bhaṭṭa Lollaṭa rejects the Audbhaṭa answer and offers his own. Against s3 he holds that rasa and bhāva really can be in the actor — through the rising of his stored impressions (vāsanā-āveśa) and the power of his anusandhi, his active identifying with the character; and he does keep the rhythm, so nothing breaks down. As for the repetition: even though these are included already, they are enumerated again for a definite purpose, and the order is simply not what Bharata cares to convey.
This is Lollaṭa's utpatti-vāda in seed form: rasa is literally produced in the character and, by anusandhi, in the actor. Abhinava reports it here without endorsing it — his own verdict is postponed in s8 — so the view stands unharmonized with s3.
यह लोल्लट के उत्पत्ति-वाद का बीज-रूप है — रस वस्तुतः पात्र में उत्पन्न होता है, और अनुसन्धान के द्वारा नट में भी। अभिनवगुप्त इसे यहाँ बिना अनुमोदन के उद्धृत करते हैं — अपना निर्णय s8 में स्थगित रखते हैं — इसलिए यह मत s3 के साथ बिना समन्वय के खड़ा रहता है।

Abhinava opens the word kārikā up. It is called kārikā because it brings the meaning to knowledge (jñapti-sādhaka) and aims at that meaning. And he glosses the verse's word 'sūtrataḥ': the suffix -taḥ here just means 'by' — 'by the sūtra'.
जो बोध (ज्ञप्ति) को सिद्ध करती है और इसी बोध के लिए प्रवृत्त होती है, वह कारिका है — यह पहली व्युत्पत्ति है। तथा श्लोक में जो 'सूत्रतः' है, उसका अर्थ 'सूत्र के द्वारा' है।

tena sūtram api kārikā; tat-sūtram apekṣya yā anu paścāt paṭhitā śloka-rūpā, sā api kārikā — so the sūtra too is a kārikā; and the verse recited after it, in relation to it, is also a kārikā.
इसलिए सूत्र भी कारिका है। और उस सूत्र को लेकर जो 'अनु' अर्थात् पश्चात् पढ़ी जाने वाली श्लोक-रूप रचना है, वह भी कारिका है।
So the sūtra itself counts as a kārikā. And the verse that is chanted afterward, keyed to that sūtra, is a kārikā as well. Here Abhinava reads the verse-word 'anu' (in anumantavyā) as paścāt, 'recited after' — the śloka following the sūtra.
अतः सूत्र भी कारिका है। और उस सूत्र के बाद जो श्लोक-रूप में पढ़ी जाती है — 'अनु' का अर्थ यहाँ 'पश्चात्' है — वह भी कारिका है।
Wordplay: the verse's anu-mantavyā ('to be accepted') is heard also as anu = paścāt, the verse that comes after the sūtra — grounding why the later śloka, too, is a kārikā.
यहाँ शब्द-क्रीड़ा है: श्लोक का 'अनुमन्तव्या' ('स्वीकार करने योग्य') 'अनु' अर्थात् 'पश्चात्' के रूप में भी सुना जाता है — वह श्लोक जो सूत्र के बाद आता है। इसी से यह सिद्ध होता है कि बाद वाला श्लोक भी कारिका है।

Abhinava fills the picture in. The sūtra only hints; the meaning drawn out of it is a full definition. When that same meaning is put into metre as a plain, hearable description, said in few words, and it both names the special property of the thing being defined and fences it off from all other things (vyavaccheda) — that is the kārikā.
अर्थात् सूत्र तो केवल संकेत करता है; उससे जो लक्षण-रूप अर्थ मिलता है, वही जब भली-भाँति, छन्दोबद्ध वर्णन से और थोड़े शब्दों में निरूपित होकर, लक्ष्य वस्तु के विशेष धर्म को तथा अन्य धर्मियों से उसके भेद को दिखाता है, तब कारिका कहलाता है।
This segment is badly corrupted; the manuscript carries competing readings (samyagiti śrayya- vs samyagatiśravya-; varṇānyaneneti vs varṇanātmaneti). The construe follows the more intelligible variants; the sense — sūtra hints, kārikā defines and excludes — is secure from the surrounding argument.

Strictly, kārikā names the defining meaning and the sūtra that carries it. The śloka gets the name only by extension (upacāra), because it too lights up that meaning.

kārikā: home meaning, a terse defining verse; here Abhinava is prying the name loose from any particular verse-form and fixing it to the defining sense (artha) that a sūtra or a śloka may equally carry — the point set up at s13-s18 (jñapti-sādhakatvāt tad-arthinī kārikā).
कारिका का घरेलू अर्थ है एक संक्षिप्त लक्षण-श्लोक; यहाँ अभिनवगुप्त इस नाम को किसी विशेष श्लोक-रूप से अलग करके उसी लक्षण-अर्थ में स्थिर कर रहे हैं, जिसे सूत्र और श्लोक समान रूप से धारण कर सकते हैं — यही बात पहले (ज्ञप्ति-साधकत्वात् तदर्थिनी कारिका) रखी गई थी।
