śānta-vīrādbhuta-prīta-vatsaleṣu tu sātvatī |
śānta-vīrādbhuta-prīta-vatsaleṣuin the rasas śānta (peace), vīra (heroism), adbhuta (wonder), prīta (the loving service of dāsya), and vatsala (parental love) locative plural — 'in these five rasas [the following vṛtti is the one used]'; the compound lists five moods, vīrādbhuta = vīra + adbhuta by sandhiशान्त, वीर, अद्भुत, प्रीत और वत्सल — इन पाँच रसों में (सप्तमी); अर्थात् जहाँ ये रस हों वहाँ
tuas for these connective, pairing this set of rasas with its vṛtti; it is set off against the kaiśikī group of L2 (tu … tu)तो, इस रस-समूह को उसकी वृत्ति के साथ जोड़ता हुआ; L2 के कैशिकी-समूह के प्रति यह भेद दिखाता है (तु … तु)
sātvatīthe sātvatī vṛtti — the grand, noble dramatic mode — is the one used nominative feminine; the word vṛttiḥ (and the verb proktā) are supplied from L2. sātvatī is one of the four dramatic modes of representationसात्वती (वृत्ति) कही गई है; 'वृत्तिः' और 'प्रोक्ता' पद L2 से लाए जाते हैं
śānta-vīrādbhuta-prīta-vatsaleṣu tu — as for [the rasas] śānta, vīra, adbhuta, prīta, and vatsala; sātvatī [vṛttiḥ proktā] — the sātvatī vṛtti is declared [to be the fitting one].
śānta-vīrādbhuta-prīta-vatsaleṣu — शान्त, वीर, अद्भुत, प्रीत और वत्सल इन पाँच रसों में; tu — तो; sātvatī — सात्वती वृत्ति (कही गई है)।
This verse fixes which dramatic style (vṛtti) belongs with which rasa — what the tradition calls rasa-naiyatya, the settled correspondence. Take five rasas: śānta (peace), vīra (heroism), adbhuta (wonder), prīta (the loving service of dāsya), and vatsala (parental love). For all of these the mode carried on stage is the sātvatī vṛtti, the grand, noble style. The word 'vṛtti' itself and the verb 'is declared' wait until the next line.
शान्त, वीर, अद्भुत, प्रीत और वत्सल — इन पाँच रसों में सात्वती वृत्ति होती है। यहाँ 'वृत्ति है, ऐसा कहा गया' — ये पद अगली पंक्ति से समझ लेने चाहिए।
The vṛttis are the four modes of dramatic representation from nāṭya-śāstra: kaiśikī (graceful, delicate), sātvatī (grand, noble), ārabhaṭī (energetic, violent), and bhāratī (verbal, eloquent). The previous kārikā (nc.9.3) counted the first three as the artha-vṛttis and bhāratī as the śabda-vṛtti, then promised their rasa-naiyatya; this verse and the next (kārikās of vibhāga 9) lay out that fixed rule of which vṛtti suits which rasa. In the Gauḍīya scheme prīta and preyas are the names for dāsya (loving service) and sakhya (friendship) rasa, and śṛṅgāra is madhura.

preyaḥ śṛṅgāra-hāsyeṣu proktā vṛttis tu kaiśikī ||
preyaḥ śṛṅgāra-hāsyeṣubut in the rasas preyas (the friendship of sakhya), śṛṅgāra (amorous love, i.e. madhura), and hāsya (the comic) locative plural, one three-membered compound naming the rasas of this second groupप्रेयस्, शृंगार और हास्य — इन तीन रसों में (सप्तमी); यह दूसरे समूह के रसों को गिनाने वाला एक समास है
proktāis declared, is taught [to be the fitting one] feminine past participle agreeing with vṛttiḥ; it governs L1 as well, where it is understoodकही गई है (स्त्रीलिंग भूत-कृदन्त, 'वृत्तिः' के अनुरूप); यही पद L1 पर भी लागू होता है, जहाँ वह अध्याहृत है
vṛttiḥthe vṛtti — the dramatic mode, the style of representationवृत्ति (अभिनय की शैली)
tuand here, by contrast connective, marking this second pairing off against the sātvatī group of L1तो, इस दूसरे मेल को L1 के सात्वती-समूह के प्रति भेद से अलग करता हुआ
kaiśikīnamely the kaiśikī — the graceful, delicate style nominative feminine, the vṛtti named for this groupकैशिकी — इस समूह के लिए नियत वृत्ति (कर्तृपद)
preyaḥ-śṛṅgāra-hāsyeṣu tu — but in [the rasas] preyas, śṛṅgāra, and hāsya; kaiśikī vṛttiḥ proktā — the vṛtti called kaiśikī is declared [to be the fitting one].
preyaḥ śṛṅgāra-hāsyeṣu — प्रेयस्, शृंगार और हास्य इन रसों में; proktā vṛttiḥ — कही गई वृत्ति; tu — तो; kaiśikī — कैशिकी है।
Now the other group. For preyas (the friendship of sakhya), śṛṅgāra (amorous love, i.e. madhura), and hāsya (the comic), the vṛtti taught is the kaiśikī, the graceful and delicate style. So the two lines pair the modes with the moods: sātvatī, the grand style, for the noble rasas of L1, and kaiśikī, the tender style, for the loving and playful rasas here.
प्रेयस्, शृंगार और हास्य — इन तीन रसों में कैशिकी वृत्ति कही गई है। और यह 'कही गई है' पद पिछली पंक्ति में भी लागू होता है, जहाँ सात्वती के साथ उसका अध्याहार करना है।
śānta-vīra-adbhuta-prīta-vatsaleṣu tu sātvatī [vṛttiḥ proktā]; preyaḥ-śṛṅgāra-hāsyeṣu tu kaiśikī vṛttiḥ proktā.
śānta-vīra-adbhuta-prīta-vatsaleṣu tu sātvatī (vṛttiḥ proktā), preyaḥ-śṛṅgāra-hāsyeṣu tu kaiśikī vṛttiḥ proktā।
For the rasas of śānta (peace), vīra (heroism), adbhuta (wonder), prīta (the loving service of dāsya), and vatsala (parental love), the dramatic mode declared fitting is the sātvatī vṛtti, the grand and noble style; but for preyas (the friendship of sakhya), śṛṅgāra (amorous love, i.e. madhura), and hāsya (the comic), the mode declared is the kaiśikī vṛtti, the graceful and delicate style.
शान्त, वीर, अद्भुत, प्रीत और वत्सल — इन पाँच रसों में तो सात्वती वृत्ति कही गई है; और प्रेयस्, शृंगार तथा हास्य — इन तीन रसों में कैशिकी वृत्ति कही गई है।
A definition-kārikā (Rūpa's own) fixing the rasa-naiyatya of the vṛttis — pairing sātvatī with five noble rasas and kaiśikī with three tender-and-playful rasas.
यह कारिका रसों के दो समूहों के साथ उनकी नियत वृत्तियों — सात्वती और कैशिकी — का विभाजन बतलाती है।
