Now Rūpa defines narma-sphoṭa, another of the eighteen kinds of narma. The name means the 'cracking-open' of a jest — the moment playful banter first breaks into the open. What marks it: it is betrayed only by slight traces of feeling (bhāva-leśa), a mere flicker of emotion rather than a full show. And because the feeling barely surfaces, it carries only a little rasa. So narma-sphoṭa is the faintest, least-developed of these playful moods — hinted at, not yet ripened.

Distinguish narma-sphoṭa (defined here) from the near-identical narma-sphañja, the first of the eighteen kinds named in v191. Both use a 'bursting' image but are separate technical terms: sphoṭa is from √sphuṭ ('to crack, burst open'), sphañja from √sphuñj ('to burst forth, blossom').
