L1example
sakhi kurvatī vivikte vanamālā-gumphanābhyāsam |
sakhiO friend — the speaker (a gopī) turns to the girlfriend she has caught outहे सखी!
kurvatīyou who keep busy at, you who are practicing nominative feminine present participle, describing tvam 'you' in L2 — the addressee is caught in the actकरती हुई (स्त्रीलिंग कर्तृवाचक — L2 की 'तू' का वर्णन; तू ठीक करते हुए पकड़ी गई)
vivikteoff in a secluded, private spot — she does it where no one will see locative of place; the secrecy is what makes it a giveaway gestureएकान्त में (सप्तमी, स्थान की — छिपकर करना ही तो भेद खोल देता है)
vanamālā-gumphanābhyāsamstringing a vanamālā over and over — the forest-flower garland Kṛṣṇa wears accusative, object of kurvatī; vanamālā 'garland of forest flowers (Kṛṣṇa's own)' + gumphana 'threading, stringing' + abhyāsa 'doing it again and again, practice'वनमाला गूँथने का अभ्यास (द्वितीया, 'करती हुई' का कर्म — वनमाला = वन के फूलों की माला, कृष्ण की अपनी माला; गुम्फन = गूँथना, पिरोना; अभ्यास = बार-बार करना)
sakhi — O friend; vivikte — off in a private spot; vanamālā-gumphanābhyāsam — the repeated stringing of a vanamālā, Kṛṣṇa's forest-flower garland; kurvatī — [you] who keep busy at it.
One gopī catches another and teases her. "O friend — off in a hidden corner, you keep stringing a vanamālā, the very forest-flower garland Kṛṣṇa wears, doing it over and over." The point is the gesture (ceṣṭā): no one made her, and she hides to do it, so the act itself betrays whom her heart is set on. The verse withholds its sting until the next line.
An udāharaṇa of anurāga-prakāśa 'the revealing of deep loving attachment' through ceṣṭā (gesture), the third of its three channels. The kārikā rode in on 8.176's lead-in — anurāga-prakāśo'pi bhogecchā-narmavat tridhā, 'the revealing of attachment too, like the revealing of the desire for union, is three-fold' — and 8.176 illustrated vācā (speech), 8.177 veśa (dress); this verse (ceṣṭayā, 'by gesture') completes the set. vanamālā is Kṛṣṇa's characteristic garland, so secretly making one is a gesture that gives her love away.
L2example
viditāsi tvam akhaṇḍita-pātivratye kṛtaṁ bhaṇitaiḥ ||
viditā asi tvamyou stand found out — your secret is now out viditā (feminine past participle 'known, discovered') + asi 'you are' + tvam 'you'; the teasing accusation landsतू जान ली गई है (विदिता = जानी-पहचानी गई, स्त्रीलिंग भूतकालिक; असि = तू है; त्वम् = तू — छेड़ता हुआ आरोप ठीक निशाने पर बैठ जाता है)
akhaṇḍita-pātivratyeO you of spotless wifely fidelity! — said with a grin, since her hidden love just showed vocative feminine, sarcastic; akhaṇḍita 'unbroken' + pātivratya 'the vow of a chaste wife to her husband'हे अखण्ड पातिव्रत्यवाली!
kṛtaṁ bhaṇitaiḥso enough of your protests! — no more of your talk kṛtam + instrumental is the idiom 'done with ~, no use for ~'; bhaṇita 'sayings, denials, talk'इन बातों से क्या लाभ!
akhaṇḍita-pātivratye — O you of spotless wifely fidelity!; tvam — you; viditā asi — stand found out; kṛtaṁ bhaṇitaiḥ — so have done with your protests.
Now the sting. "You are found out — O paragon of unbroken chastity!" The grand title is pure sarcasm: the girl has been loudly protesting her fidelity to her husband, but the garland-making has exposed where her heart really lies. So the friend cuts her off: "Enough of your talk" (kṛtaṁ bhaṇitaiḥ) — no denial will hold now. The gesture has said what words tried to hide, which is exactly how ceṣṭā reveals anurāga.
he akhaṇḍita-pātivratye! he sakhi! vivikte vanamālā-gumphana-abhyāsaṁ kurvatī tvaṁ viditā asi; (ataḥ) bhaṇitaiḥ kṛtam.
O friend — off in a hidden corner you keep stringing a vanamālā, the very forest-flower garland Kṛṣṇa wears, doing it over and over: O paragon of unbroken wifely fidelity, you now stand found out! So have done with your protests — no denials will hold any longer.
An udāharaṇa of anurāga-prakāśa (the revealing of deep loving attachment) through ceṣṭā (gesture), the third of its three channels after vācā (8.176) and veśa (8.177): the secret, self-chosen act of stringing Kṛṣṇa's own garland betrays where the heart is set, and the sarcastic 'kṛtaṁ bhaṇitaiḥ' seals it.
