śyāme yām anurodhasi priya-sakhī-vargāntara-sthāyinī
śyāmeO Śyāmā — the sakhī addresses the dark-hued girl she is speaking to vocative; the speaker of the verse turns to one companion named Śyāmāहे श्यामे! (सम्बोधन — पद्य का वक्ता श्यामा नाम की एक सखी की ओर मुड़ता है)
yāmthe very girl whom relative feminine accusative, object of anurodhasi; points ahead to the one being describedजिस (सखी) को (सम्बन्धवाची स्त्रीलिंग द्वितीया, अनुरोधसि का कर्म; आगे वर्णित की जाने वाली सखी की ओर संकेत)
anurodhasiyou keep pleading for, keep pressing me about 2nd-person singular present; 'you' is Śyāmā, the addresseeतू (मिलन के लिए) आग्रह कर रही है (मध्यम पुरुष एकवचन; 'तू' यहाँ श्यामा ही है)
priya-sakhī-varga-antara-sthāyinīshe who stands right in the midst of her band of dear girlfriends nominative — the subject; priya-sakhī 'dear friends' + varga 'group' + antara 'within' + sthāyinī 'standing'वह प्रिय सखियों के समूह के भीतर खड़ी है (कर्ता — प्रिय-सखी 'प्यारी सखियाँ' + वर्ग 'समूह' + अन्तर 'भीतर' + स्थायिनी 'ठहरी हुई')
śyāme — O Śyāmā; yām anurodhasi — the very girl you keep pressing me about; [sā] priya-sakhī-varga-antara-sthāyinī — she, standing amid her band of dear friends …
śyāme — हे श्यामे; yām anurodhasi — जिस सखी को तू (मिलन के लिए) मना रही है; priya-sakhī-varga-antara-sthāyinī — वह प्रिय सखियों के समूह के बीच खड़ी है।
A sakhī answers her friend Śyāmā. 'That girl you keep asking me about — here is what she does. She is standing in the middle of her circle of dear girlfriends …' The sentence opens here and runs on through the whole verse; the main verb comes only at the very end.
हे श्यामे! जिस सखी को तू मिलन के लिए मना रही है, वह अपनी प्रिय सखियों के समूह के बीच खड़ी है।
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of revealing the desire for union — sambhoga-icchā-prakaṭana — through ceṣṭā, 'by gesture'. Kārikā nc.8.172 (ref 260) defined this revealing as threefold: by speech (vāc), by dress (veṣa), and by gesture (ceṣṭā). After the speech-example (nc.8.173) and the dress-example (nc.8.174), the lead-in here — 'ceṣṭayā, yathā' ('by gesture, as follows') — marks this as the third: how a wordless gesture alone lets a lover's wish to unite be seen.

savyāṁ smera-mukhī dṛśaṁ madhubhidaḥ smere mukhāmbhoruhe |
savyāmher left [glance] accusative feminine, qualifying dṛśam — the look sent from the left eyeबायीं (द्वितीया स्त्रीलिंग, दृशम् का विशेषण — बायीं आँख से भेजी गयी दृष्टि)
smera-mukhīshe herself smiling-faced nominative describing the girl; smera 'smiling' + mukhī 'faced'मुस्कुराते मुखवाली वह (कर्ता — स्मेर 'मुस्कुराता' + मुखी 'मुखवाली')
dṛśamcasts her glance accusative, the object of kiratī (which arrives in L3)दृष्टि को (द्वितीया, किरती का कर्म, जो क्रिया L3 में आती है)
madhubhidaḥof Madhubhid (Kṛṣṇa, slayer of the demon Madhu) — whose face it is genitive depending on mukha-ambhoruheमधु दैत्य के हन्ता कृष्ण के (षष्ठी, मुख-अम्भोरुह पर निर्भर)
smerewhich is also smiling locative agreeing with mukha-ambhoruhe — his face smiles backमुस्कुराते हुए (सप्तमी, मुख-अम्भोरुह से मेल — उनका मुख भी प्रत्युत्तर में मुस्कुरा उठता है)
mukha-ambhoruheupon his lotus-face locative — where the left glance lands; mukha 'face' + ambhoruha 'lotus'मुखकमल पर (सप्तमी — जहाँ बायीं दृष्टि पड़ती है; मुख 'चेहरा' + अम्भोरुह 'कमल')
smera-mukhī — she, her face smiling; savyāṁ dṛśam — her left glance; madhubhidaḥ smere mukha-ambhoruhe — upon the smiling lotus-face of Kṛṣṇa …
smera-mukhī — मुस्कुराते मुखवाली वह; savyām dṛśam — अपनी बायीं दृष्टि को; madhubhidaḥ smere mukha-ambhoruhe — कृष्ण के मुस्कुराते मुखकमल पर (डालती हुई)।
She herself is smiling. With her left eye she sends a glance straight to Kṛṣṇa's face. His face is a lotus — and it too is smiling back at her. Both faces smile at the same moment.
मुस्कुराते मुख से वह अपनी बायीं दृष्टि कृष्ण के मुस्कुराते हुए मुखकमल पर डालती है।

bhṛṅgodbhāsini dakṣiṇāṁ tu kiratī krīḍā-nikuñje muhuḥ
bhṛṅga-udbhāsiniaglow with hovering bees locative, still qualifying mukha-ambhoruhe; a true lotus draws bees, and so does his lotus-faceभ्रमरों से शोभित उस (मुखकमल) पर (सप्तमी, अब भी मुख-अम्भोरुह का विशेषण; सच्चा कमल भ्रमरों को खींचता है, वैसे ही उनका मुखकमल)
dakṣiṇāmbut her right [glance] accusative — the other eye's look, set against savyām of L2दायीं (द्वितीया — दूसरी आँख की दृष्टि, L2 की बायीं के विपरीत)
tuwhile, by contrast marks the split between the two eyesपरन्तु (दोनों आँखों के बीच के भेद को दिखाता है)
kiratīshe keeps scattering, keeps casting present participle feminine — the action word governing both the left glance and the rightफेंकती हुई / बिखेरती हुई (वर्तमान कृदन्त स्त्रीलिंग — बायीं और दायीं दोनों दृष्टियों को चलाने वाली क्रिया)
krīḍā-nikuñjetoward the play-bower locative — where the right glance is aimed; krīḍā 'amorous play' + nikuñja 'grove, bower'क्रीड़ा-कुंज की ओर (सप्तमी — जहाँ दायीं दृष्टि लक्षित है; क्रीड़ा 'प्रेमक्रीड़ा' + निकुंज 'लता-कुंज')
muhuḥagain and again adverb — the right glance is thrown repeatedlyबार-बार (क्रियाविशेषण — दायीं दृष्टि बार-बार फेंकी जाती है)
[madhubhidaḥ smere mukha-ambhoruhe] bhṛṅga-udbhāsini — upon [his lotus-face] aglow with bees; dakṣiṇāṁ tu — but her right glance; krīḍā-nikuñje muhuḥ kiratī — she keeps casting, again and again, toward the play-bower.
bhṛṅga-udbhāsini — भ्रमरों से शोभित उस मुखकमल पर (बायीं दृष्टि फेंककर); dakṣiṇām tu — परन्तु दायीं दृष्टि को; krīḍā-nikuñje muhuḥ kiratī — क्रीड़ा-कुंज की ओर बार-बार फेंकती हुई।
His lotus-face even draws bees, just as a real lotus does — so one eye rests happily on his face. But the right eye she throws, over and over, toward the nikuñja, the bower where lovers meet. Left eye on him, right eye on the trysting-grove. The two eyes give away two things at once.
उनका वह मुखकमल भ्रमरों से शोभित है। परन्तु अपनी दायीं दृष्टि वह बार-बार क्रीड़ा-कुंज की ओर फेंकती है।
The split glance is itself the ceṣṭā, the gesture. The left eye adores Kṛṣṇa's face; the right eye points, again and again, to the krīḍā-nikuñja — silently naming the place she longs to meet him. Not a word is spoken; the gesture alone reveals her sambhoga-icchā, the desire for union.

sūrye rajyati sacchalaṁ vicinute tāpāya puṣpāvalim ||
sūrye rajyatias the sun turns red at dusk locative absolute — sets the timing; twilight, the trysting hour, is drawing onजब सूर्य रक्तिम हो रहा है (सति-सप्तमी — समय बताती है; सन्ध्या, मिलन की बेला, समीप आ रही है)
sacchalamon a fair-seeming pretext adverbial; sat 'plausible, respectable' + chala 'pretext' — a cover that hides the real aimउचित-से बहाने से (क्रियाविशेषण; सत् 'विश्वसनीय, समुचित' + छल 'बहाना' — एक ऐसा आवरण जो असली मंशा को छिपा देता है)
vicinuteshe picks out, gathers 3rd-person singular middle present — the main verb the whole sentence was waiting forचुन रही है / बीन रही है (आत्मनेपद वर्तमान — वह मुख्य क्रिया जिसकी पूरा वाक्य प्रतीक्षा कर रहा था)
tāpāyato ease the heat — so she pretends; but tāpa is also the fever of longing dative of purpose; the stated reason is the day's heat, yet tāpa names love's burning too — pretext and truth in one wordताप के लिए (सम्प्रदान चतुर्थी; कहा गया कारण दिन की गर्मी है, परन्तु 'ताप' प्रेम की जलन को भी कहता है — बहाना और सत्य एक ही शब्द में)
puṣpa-āvalima spray, a row of blossoms accusative, object of vicinute; puṣpa 'flower' + āvali 'row, cluster'फूलों की पंक्ति को (द्वितीया, विचिनुते का कर्म; पुष्प 'फूल' + आवलि 'पंक्ति, समूह')
sūrye rajyati — as the sun reddens at dusk; sacchalam — on a fair pretext; tāpāya — to relieve the heat; puṣpa-āvalim vicinute — she gathers a spray of flowers.
sūrye rajyati — जब सूर्य रक्तिम हो रहा है; sacchalam — उचित-से बहाने से; tāpāya puṣpa-āvalim vicinute — ताप के लिए फूलों की पंक्ति चुनती है।
Now dusk comes on, the sun going red. She makes a show of gathering flowers — as if only to cool the evening heat. That is the excuse. But the word tāpa means both the heat of the day and the fever of her longing. Picking flowers by the bower at dusk is her real message: without a single word, she is telling Kṛṣṇa where and when she wishes to meet. That gesture is the whole point — the ceṣṭā by which the desire for union is revealed.

O Śyāmā, that very girl you keep pressing me about — standing in the midst of her band of dear girlfriends, her own face all smiles — casts her left glance upon the smiling, bee-bright lotus-face of Kṛṣṇa, the slayer of Madhu, while her right glance she flings again and again toward the trysting-bower; and now, as the sun reddens at dusk, on a fair-seeming pretext — 'only to cool the heat' — she gathers a spray of blossoms (the word tāpa naming both the day's warmth and the fever of her longing).
An udāharaṇa of sambhoga-icchā-prakaṭana by ceṣṭā ('by gesture') — the third mode, after vāc (speech, nc.8.173) and veṣa (dress, nc.8.174), of revealing the desire for union defined in kārikā nc.8.172; the split glance and the dusk flower-gathering are the wordless gesture that discloses her wish to meet.
चेष्टा (शारीरिक हाव-भाव) के द्वारा भाव-प्रकाशन का उदाहरण — दोनों आँखों की भिन्न दिशा और 'ताप के लिए फूल चुनने' के श्लिष्ट बहाने से सखी का गूढ़ अनुराग व्यंजित होता है।
