agrāmyaḥ parihāsaḥ syān narma tat tu tridhā matam |
śṛṅgāra-hāsyajaṁ śuddha-hāsyajaṁ bhaya-hāsyajam ||
The verse — decoded
L1definition
agrāmyaḥ parihāsaḥ syān narma tat tu tridhā matam |
agrāmyaḥnot vulgar — refined, free of anything coarse or rustic a-grāmya, 'not of the village'; nom. masc., qualifying parihāsaḥ — this is the mark that lifts the jest into narmaजो गँवारू या अश्लील न हो — यही वह लक्षण है जो परिहास को नर्म बना देता है (परिहास का विशेषण)
parihāsaḥa jest, playful teasing nom. masc. — the base thing being refined into narmaहँसी-मज़ाक — वही मूल वस्तु जिसे परिष्कृत करके नर्म कहा जाता है
syātshould be, is to be optative — sets the definitional 'let it be such'हो — विधिलिङ्, जो 'ऐसा हो' कहकर परिभाषा बाँधता है
narmagoes by the name narma (refined playful banter) nom. neut. — the term being defined; the neuter carries through to tat and the -jam forms in L2नर्म — यही वह पद है जिसकी परिभाषा दी जा रही है
tat tuand that narma, for its part tat picks up narma; tu turns from the definition to the division that followsवह (नर्म); परन्तु — परिभाषा से हटकर अब उसके भेद की ओर मुड़ता है
tridhāis of three kinds adverb, 'in three ways'तीन प्रकार का
matamis held to be, is reckoned past part., neut., agreeing with tat narma — the settled view of the authoritiesमाना गया है — आचार्यों का यही सिद्ध मत है
agrāmyaḥ parihāsaḥ narma syāt — a non-vulgar jest is to be [called] narma; tat tu tridhā matam — and that narma is held to be of three kinds.
Now Rūpa defines narma, refined playful banter. A jest counts as narma only when it is agrāmya — not coarse, not vulgar, free of anything crude. That is the whole definition: a jest kept refined. Then he adds a division: this narma, the tradition holds, comes in three kinds — which the next line will name.
narma is refined, affectionate teasing — a dramatic ornament of the graceful register, not idle mockery. The one defining mark given here is agrāmya, 'non-vulgar': the same jest turns coarse and falls out of narma the moment it goes crude. The verse then splits narma into three, listed in L2.
L2definition
śṛṅgāra-hāsyajaṁ śuddha-hāsyajaṁ bhaya-hāsyajam ||
śṛṅgāra-hāsyajamthe first, born of śṛṅgāra (the erotic) mixed with hāsya (the comic) — teasing that arises out of love -ja, 'born of'; neut., agreeing with narma; śṛṅgāra-hāsya is the source it springs fromशृंगार और हास्य के मेल से उत्पन्न (नर्म का विशेषण) — यही उसका उद्गम है
śuddha-hāsyajamthe second, born of pure hāsya (the comic alone) — a jest that is simply funny, with no other rasa woven in śuddha, 'pure, unmixed'; -ja, 'born of'शुद्ध अर्थात् केवल हास्य से उत्पन्न, जिसमें और कोई भाव न मिला हो
bhaya-hāsyajamthe third, born of bhaya (fear) turning into hāsya (the comic) — a fright that dissolves into laughter -ja, 'born of'; bhaya-hāsya is the pairing that gives rise to itभय और हास्य के मेल से उत्पन्न
śṛṅgāra-hāsyajam — [narma] born of the erotic-comic; śuddha-hāsyajam — born of the pure comic; bhaya-hāsyajam — born of the fear-comic.
Here are the three kinds. The first, śṛṅgāra-hāsyaja, springs from love mixed with laughter — teasing between lovers. The second, śuddha-hāsyaja, is pure comedy with nothing else blended in — a jest that is simply funny. The third, bhaya-hāsyaja, is born when fear turns comic — a scare that ends in laughter. In each name -ja means 'born of,' naming the source the jest arises from.
The three names are all -ja compounds ('born of'), each naming the source-blend of the jest: śṛṅgāra + hāsya, hāsya alone (śuddha, 'pure'), and bhaya + hāsya. hāsya, the comic rasa, is common to all three; what differs is the feeling it is fused with — love, nothing, or fear.
agrāmyaḥ parihāsaḥ narma syāt; tat tu narma tridhā matam — śṛṅgāra-hāsyajam, śuddha-hāsyajam, bhaya-hāsyajam (iti).
A jest that is not vulgar — refined, free of anything coarse or crude — is what goes by the name narma; and that narma, the tradition holds, is of three kinds: one born of śṛṅgāra fused with hāsya (teasing that springs from love), one born of pure hāsya alone (a jest that is simply funny), and one born of bhaya turning into hāsya (a fright that dissolves into laughter).
A lakṣaṇa-kārikā that defines narma (refined playful banter) by its single mark, agrāmya, and then divides it into its three recognized kinds.
