[sphañjaḥ] — the first of the three, narma-sphañja; śṛṅgāra-rasa-bhūyiṣṭhaḥ — has the amorous mood as its leading note; priya-cittānurañjakaḥ — and gladdens the heart of the beloved.
The half-line just before this (the lead-in) named three sub-limbs of the kaiśikī mode — sphañja, sphoṭa, and garbha — and said their definitions now follow. This line gives the first, narma-sphañja. It has two marks. First, śṛṅgāra-rasa is its leading note (bhūyiṣṭha) — the playful exchange is soaked in the amorous mood. Second, it gladdens the heart of the beloved (priya-citta-anurañjaka) — its whole point is to please the loved one.
narma-sphañja is one of the four aṅgas (sub-limbs) of the kaiśikī vṛtti listed in the previous kārikā (v168): narma and the three that follow it — sphañja, sphoṭa, garbha. It is a light, amorous banter in which śṛṅgāra predominates and whose aim is to please the priya, the beloved. bhūyiṣṭha ('most abundant') marks śṛṅgāra as the dominant rasa here, not the only one.

The sphañja (narma-sphañja) is that playful exchange in which the amorous mood (śṛṅgāra-rasa) is the leading, predominant note, and which gladdens the very heart of the beloved.
Defines narma-sphañja, the first of the three sub-limbs (sphañja, sphoṭa, garbha) announced in the lead-in half-line, by its two marks: śṛṅgāra predominant, and delighting the beloved's heart.
