parasparaṁ gabhīroktiḥ saṁlāpa iti kīrtyate ||
The verse — decoded
L1definition
īrṣyā-krodhādibhir bhāvai rasair vīrādbhutādibhiḥ |
īrṣyā-krodhādibhiḥcarried by feelings such as jealousy (īrṣyā), anger (krodha), and the like the ādi ('and the rest') opens the list to the neighbouring emotions tooईर्ष्या, क्रोध आदि के द्वारा — 'आदि' कहकर इनसे मिलते-जुलते और भी भावों तक सूची खुल जाती है
bhāvaiḥ— that is, run on the bhāvas, the raw underlying feelings instrumental of accompaniment; īrṣyā-krodhādibhiḥ describes these bhāvasइन भावों के साथ (जिन्हें ईर्ष्या-क्रोध आदि विशेषित करते हैं)
rasaiḥand run, too, on the rasas, the developed dramatic moods second instrumental, parallel to bhāvaiḥ — the exchange draws on both feelings and moodsऔर रसों के साथ भी — यह वार्तालाप भाव तथा रस दोनों को आधार बनाता है
vīrādbhutādibhiḥsuch as vīra (the heroic) and adbhuta (the wondrous), and the rest qualifies rasaiḥ; ādi extends the list to the other moodsवीर, अद्भुत आदि रसों के द्वारा — यहाँ भी 'आदि' शेष रसों तक सूची बढ़ा देता है
īrṣyā-krodhādibhiḥ bhāvaiḥ — carried by feelings such as jealousy and anger; rasaiḥ vīrādbhutādibhiḥ — and by moods such as the heroic and the wondrous.
The speech runs on two things at once. First on bhāvas — feelings like jealousy (īrṣyā) and anger (krodha). Second on rasas, the fuller dramatic moods, like the heroic (vīra) and the wondrous (adbhuta). The 'and the rest' in each list leaves room for the neighbouring feelings and moods as well.
bhāva and rasa are kept distinct here. A bhāva is the raw feeling itself — anger, jealousy — as it stirs in a character; a rasa is that feeling brought to full dramatic ripeness and savoured by the audience, like the heroic or the wondrous. The definition says a saṁlāpa may be powered by either or both.

parasparaṁ gabhīroktiḥ saṁlāpa iti kīrtyate ||
parasparamtraded back and forth between the characters, each answering the other adverb — 'mutually, one to another'; this reciprocity is what makes it a saṁlāpa and not a single speechपरस्पर, एक-दूसरे के प्रति — यही आपसी आदान-प्रदान इसे संलाप बनाता है, किसी एक का भाषण नहीं
gabhīroktiḥa deep, weighty utterance gabhīra ('profound') + ukti ('speech'); nominative — this is the thing being definedगम्भीर उक्ति, भारी अर्थवाली वाणी — यही वह वस्तु है जिसकी परिभाषा दी जा रही है
saṁlāpa itigoes by the name saṁlāpa (a 'conversation-exchange') iti closes the definition, naming what has just been described'संलाप' इस नाम से — 'इति' कहकर अभी जो वर्णन हुआ उसे नाम दे दिया जाता है
kīrtyateis what the authorities proclaim it passive — 'is celebrated / declared as'कहा जाता है, घोषित किया जाता है (कर्मवाच्य)
parasparam gabhīra-uktiḥ — a profound speech exchanged mutually; saṁlāpa iti kīrtyate — is proclaimed to be saṁlāpa.
When such profound speech is traded back and forth between the characters — each one replying to the other — it is called saṁlāpa, the 'conversation-exchange.' So the mood-laden mutual deep talk of the first line is exactly what earns this name.
saṁlāpa is a technical dialogue-limb (the subsection heading names it). Its two marks are gathered by the verse: the speech must be gabhīra, weighty rather than idle, and it must be parasparam, a genuine exchange in which each speaker takes up the other — not one character's set speech.

A weighty, deep utterance traded back and forth between the characters — each one answering the other — running at once on feelings such as jealousy and anger and on dramatic moods such as the heroic and the wondrous: this is what the authorities proclaim to be a saṁlāpa, the 'conversation-exchange.'
Defines the dialogue-limb saṁlāpa: its two marks are that the speech be gabhīra (weighty, mood-laden with bhāvas and rasas) and parasparam (a genuine mutual exchange, not one character's set speech).
