anyonyam āsīd guru-samprahāraḥ |
anyonyamon each other — the two struck back and forth adverb, 'each against the other'; makes the blows mutualआपस में एक-दूसरे के विरुद्ध (जिससे प्रहार दोनों ओर से हुआ)
āsītthere arose, there was imperfect of √asहुआ, हो रहा था
guru-samprahāraḥa mighty, pounding exchange of blows guru 'heavy, great' + samprahāra 'clashing combat'भारी संग्राम, घोर मल्लयुद्ध (गुरु = प्रचण्ड, सम्प्रहार = भिड़न्त)
guru-samprahāraḥ — a mighty exchange of blows; anyonyam — trading it on each other; āsīt — there arose.
A great, pounding exchange of blows broke out — Murāri (Kṛṣṇa) and the wrestler Cāṇūra, named in the lead-in line, hammering at each other, blow answering blow.
An udāharaṇa of sampheṭa, defined in the kārikā just before it (250): 'sampheṭa is a fierce clash (samāghāta) joined between the angry (kruddha) and the still-more-angry (saṅkruddha)' — one of the aṅgas of the sātvatī vṛtti, the grand heroic style. The wrestling bout of Kṛṣṇa and Cāṇūra is the clash; how fierce it was is shown by what it does to the two men watching (L2-L3).

kaṁsasya yenānakadundubheś ca
kaṁsasyaof Kaṁsa genitive; its noun is uraḥ 'chest' in L3 — 'Kaṁsa's chest'कंस का (जिसका 'उरः' = वक्षःस्थल L3 में आता है)
yenaby which very clash instrumental of the relative yad, pointing back to the samprahāra of L1; the fight is the causeजिस (संग्राम) के कारण — यह L1 के सम्प्रहार की ओर संकेत करता है, वही युद्ध कारण है
ānakadundubheḥ caand of Ānakadundubhi — that is, of Vasudeva ca joins the second genitive; ānakadundubhi 'kettledrum-and-drum' is an epithet of Vasudeva, Kṛṣṇa's fatherऔर आनकदुन्दुभि (वसुदेव, कृष्ण के पिता का नाम) का — 'च' दूसरे सम्बन्ध को जोड़ता है
yena — by which very clash; kaṁsasya — of Kaṁsa; ānakadundubheḥ ca — and of Ānakadundubhi (Vasudeva).
And it was this very clash by which — for both Kaṁsa and for Ānakadundubhi, that is Vasudeva — something happened, which the next line names. Two men, watching the same fight.
L3example
santāpa-cintābhir uraḥ paphāla ||
santāpa-cintābhiḥbecause of burning grief and gnawing anxieties instrumental plural of cause — 'from…'; santāpa 'scorching distress', cintā 'worry'सन्ताप और चिन्ताओं के कारण (सन्ताप = जलानेवाली पीड़ा, चिन्ता = व्याकुलता)
uraḥthe chest — of each of them nominative, the subject; shared by both genitives of L2वक्षःस्थल, छाती — यही कर्ता है, और L2 के दोनों सम्बन्धों (कंस तथा वसुदेव) से जुड़ता है
paphālasplit apart, burst perfect of √phal 'to split'फट गया, विदीर्ण हो गया (√फल् 'फटना' का लिट्)
santāpa-cintābhiḥ — from burning grief and anxieties; uraḥ — the chest of each; paphāla — split apart.
The chest of each split apart from scorching grief and anxiety. Kaṁsa's, in dread that his champion Cāṇūra would fall; Vasudeva's, in a father's terror that his boy would be crushed. One and the same clash, opposite fears — and both hearts burst. That single blow wringing grief from two opposed men is what makes the clash a true sampheṭa.
(murāreḥ cāṇūra-mallena ca) anyonyam guru-samprahāraḥ āsīt; yena kaṁsasya ānakadundubheḥ ca santāpa-cintābhiḥ uraḥ paphāla.
A mighty, pounding exchange of blows broke out between them — Murāri (Kṛṣṇa) and the wrestler Cāṇūra — each hammering at the other; and by that very clash the chest of both Kaṁsa and of Ānakadundubhi (Vasudeva) split apart from burning grief and anxiety — Kaṁsa dreading that his champion would fall, Vasudeva terrified for his son — so that a single fight wrung opposite fears from two opposed men and burst both their hearts.
An udāharaṇa of sampheṭa — the fierce clash (samāghāta) joined between the angry and the still-more-angry — an aṅga of the sātvatī vṛtti, defined in the kārikā (250) just before it; the Kṛṣṇa–Cāṇūra bout illustrates it, its fierceness measured by how it bursts the hearts of the two watching men.
