vastūtthāpana: a technical nāṭya device — vastu, 'a thing/object,' plus utthāpana, 'raising up, causing to appear.' What makes it its own type is that the object appearing is māyā-upakalpita, magically or illusorily produced, rather than a real prop or entrance. It stands in the same run of stage devices as avapāta, defined in the previous kārikā (whence the contrastive tu).
वस्तूत्थापन एक नाट्य-युक्ति है — 'वस्तु' अर्थात् कोई पदार्थ, और 'उत्थापन' अर्थात् उठाकर प्रकट कर देना। इसे अपनी अलग जाति इसलिए बनाती है कि जो पदार्थ प्रकट होता है वह माया-उपकल्पित है, अर्थात् इन्द्रजाल से या मायिक रूप से रचा गया, न कि कोई वास्तविक साज-सामान या प्रवेश। यह उन्हीं रंगमंचीय युक्तियों की श्रेणी में आती है जिनमें पूर्व कारिका में परिभाषित अवपात भी है — इसी भेद के कारण यहाँ 'तु' शब्द आया है।
