vighnam ivaas if it were a mere obstacle iva marks the simile — the elephant is no more to him than something in the wayमानो कोई विघ्न (बाधा) हो — 'इव' उपमा जताता है; वह हाथी उसके लिए राह में पड़ी किसी बाधा से अधिक कुछ नहीं

agrataḥ — right in front; kuvalayāpīḍam — the elephant Kuvalayāpīḍa; vighnam iva — as if a mere obstacle; mṛdu-krīḍayā — with effortless play; nighnan — striking (him) down
Right in front of him stands the elephant Kuvalayāpīḍa. Keśava strikes it down as if brushing aside a mere obstacle. And he does it as easy, gentle play.
An udāharaṇa of avapāta, defined in the preceding kārikā — 'vibhrāntir avapātaḥ syāt praveśa-drava-vidravaiḥ': avapāta (a sandhy-aṅga) is the agitated rush shown by an entrance (praveśa) together with flight and rout (drava, vidrava). This line opens the scene of that rush.

tuṅgām raṅga-bhuvam — the lofty arena-ground; tarasā praviśya — having entered with a rush; pratyarthinām trāsanaḥ — the terror of his adversaries
He rushes into the high arena. At once he becomes the terror of his opponents.
The praveśa (entrance) of the kārikā's definition: 'tarasā praviśya' — the swift entering that sets off the avapāta.

The proud wrestlers blaze like a wildfire; he is the rain-cloud that puts it out. And with a single darting glance he sends even the lesser fighters running.
The drava/vidrava (rout, flight) of the kārikā's definition: 'drāvayan' — he makes them flee. Entrance plus flight together are what constitute avapāta.

saruḍayamwith a swooping rush adverb of manner, its sound echoing garuḍa's swoopगरुड़ जैसे झपट्टे के साथ — प्रकारवाचक क्रियाविशेषण, जिसकी ध्वनि गरुड़ के झपटने का अनुकरण करती है

keśavaḥKeśavaकेशव
paśya — look!; ārāt — close at hand; keśavaḥ — Keśava; kaṁsa-urage — upon Kaṁsa the serpent; saruḍayam garuḍāyate — swoops down, playing Garuḍa
Look — close at hand now, Keśava turns into Garuḍa. He swoops down upon Kaṁsa, that serpent.
The metaphor caps the avapāta: Garuḍa is the natural killer of serpents, so Keśava = Garuḍa and Kaṁsa = the doomed serpent. This is the climactic rush of the entrance — the whole verse thus illustrates avapāta of the preceding kārikā.

Look — close at hand! Rushing headlong into the lofty arena-ground, Keśava strikes down the war-elephant Kuvalayāpīḍa that stands in his way, brushing it aside as if it were a mere obstacle, all in effortless, gentle play. To his adversaries he is sheer terror. He is a rain-cloud over the wildfire of the proud wrestlers, and with a single darting glance he sends even the lesser fighters fleeing. Then, swooping down with a Garuḍa-like rush upon Kaṁsa — that serpent — he becomes Garuḍa himself.
An udāharaṇa illustrating avapāta, the sandhy-aṅga defined in the preceding kārikā ('vibhrāntir avapātaḥ syāt praveśa-drava-vidravaiḥ') — the agitated rush made of an entrance (praveśa), rout, and flight (drava, vidrava): here Kṛṣṇa's swift entry into Kaṁsa's arena, the felling of Kuvalayāpīḍa, and the routing of the wrestlers up to the killing of Kaṁsa.
