The vṛttis take the form of the netṛ's activity — the ways the leading man acts and carries himself on stage. And by that activity they point to where the rasa settles, showing how the mood comes to rest. So each vṛtti is at once a mode of the hero's action and a marker of the mood being established.
vṛtti here is the dramaturgical term (from the Nāṭyaśāstra) for a 'mode' or 'style' of dramatic action — the register in which the play's business is carried on. This line gives its character: a vṛtti is grounded in the hero's activity and serves to bring the rasa to rest.

catasraḥ vṛttayaḥ — the four vṛttis; dhīraiḥ — by the wise; nāṭyasya mātaraḥ — the mothers of drama; proktāḥ — have been declared.
These vṛttis are four in number. The wise, the masters of dramaturgy, have called them the mothers of the drama — the sources out of which nāṭya itself is born. Everything the play does grows from these four modes of action.
The four vṛttis of nāṭya are Kaiśikī, Sāttvatī, Ārabhaṭī, and Bhāratī, named and defined in the kārikās that follow. Calling them the 'mothers' (mātaraḥ) of drama marks them as its generative sources: no dramatic action falls outside one of these four modes.

The wise have declared the four vṛttis — the modes of dramatic action — to be the mothers of the drama: they take the form of the netṛ's activity, the ways the leading man acts and carries himself on stage, and by that very activity they point to where the rasa comes to rest, marking how the mood is established.
The defining kārikā of the vṛtti: it gives its character (a mode of the hero's action that signals the settling of rasa), fixes their number at four, and calls them the 'mothers' of nāṭya — the generative heading for the four vṛttis (Kaiśikī, Sāttvatī, Ārabhaṭī, Bhāratī) defined in the kārikās that follow.
