L1definition
athocyante svabhāvena vṛttayaḥ paramādbhutāḥ |
athanow — opening the topic of the vṛttisअब (प्रकरण के आरम्भ में)
ucyanteare now set forth / described passive; Rūpa is the implied speakerकही जाती हैं (कर्मवाच्य; कहनेवाले रूप गोस्वामी स्वयं हैं)
svabhāvenaby their very nature, spontaneously instrumental of manner; construes forward with jātāḥ in L2 — it says how they aroseअपने स्वभाव से ही — आगे 'जाताः' के साथ जुड़कर बताता है कि वे किस प्रकार उत्पन्न हुईं
vṛttayaḥthe vṛttis — the modes of dramatic actionवृत्तियाँ (नाट्य की चार वृत्तियाँ)
atha — now; vṛttayaḥ paramādbhutāḥ — the supremely wonderful vṛttis; ucyante — are set forth; svabhāvena — [and by their very nature …, carrying into L2].
Now the vṛttis are set forth — the modes of dramatic action. They are supremely wonderful. The word svabhāvena, 'by their very nature,' leans ahead into the next line: it tells how these vṛttis came to be.
vṛtti: in the Nāṭyaśāstra tradition, the four 'modes' or styles of dramatic action — kaiśikī (the graceful/erotic), sāttvatī (the noble/heroic), ārabhaṭī (the vigorous/violent), and bhāratī (the verbal/declamatory). Here Rūpa opens the topic of the vṛttis and calls them wonderful by their very nature, because of the divine origin the next line gives.

jātā nārāyaṇād etā madhu-kaiṭabhayor vadhe ||
jātāḥarose, came into beingउत्पन्न हुईं
etāḥthese (the vṛttis just named)ये (वृत्तियाँ)
madhu-kaiṭabhayoḥof the demons Madhu and Kaiṭabha genitive; whose slaying it wasमधु और कैटभ का — जिनका वध हुआ
vadheat the slaying locative — during, on the occasion ofवध के समय — उस अवसर पर
etāḥ — these vṛttis; svabhāvena — by their very nature; nārāyaṇāt — from Nārāyaṇa; jātāḥ — arose; madhu-kaiṭabhayoḥ vadhe — at the slaying of Madhu and Kaiṭabha.
These vṛttis arose from Nārāyaṇa himself. They came out naturally, at the very moment he slew the two demons Madhu and Kaiṭabha.
The origin account follows the Nāṭyaśāstra: the four vṛttis are said to have sprung from Viṣṇu (Nārāyaṇa) during his combat with the demons Madhu and Kaiṭabha — his differing movements and speech in that fight becoming the models for the four dramatic modes. This divine, spontaneous birth is what makes them 'supremely wonderful' in L1.
atha etāḥ paramādbhutāḥ vṛttayaḥ ucyante; [yataḥ] etāḥ svabhāvena madhu-kaiṭabhayoḥ vadhe nārāyaṇāt jātāḥ.
atha (अब) etāḥ paramādbhutāḥ vṛttayaḥ svabhāvena madhu-kaiṭabhayoḥ vadhe nārāyaṇāt jātāḥ (इति) ucyante।
Now the vṛttis — the modes of dramatic action — are set forth, and they are supremely wonderful; for these very modes arose of their own nature from Nārāyaṇa himself, at the moment he slew the two demons Madhu and Kaiṭabha.
Opening kārikā of the vṛtti section (subsection vṛttayaḥ): it introduces the four dramatic modes and grounds their wondrous status in their spontaneous divine origin from Nārāyaṇa at the Madhu-Kaiṭabha combat, before the illustrations that follow.
