The verse — decoded
L1definition
tatrāpi nāyikādīnāṁ śaurasenī prakīrtitā |
tatra apiand within that side too — that is, inside Prakrit, now to be split into its dialects tatra picks up the prākṛtī (Prakrit) half of the earlier twofold split; api = "even there / that too", carrying the discussion one step deeper into the sub-kinds of Prakritउन प्राकृत भेदों में भी — पहले जो प्राकृत का विभाग हुआ, अब उसी में और भीतर उतरते हुए
nāyikādīnāṁfor the heroines and characters of their kind (nāyikā + ādi = the leading women and the like) genitive of assignment — whose stage-speech it is; -ādi ("and the rest") stretches the class past the heroine proper to comparable female and lower charactersनायिका आदि पात्रों की (वाणी) — जिनकी यह रंगभाषा है; 'आदि' शब्द से नायिका के अतिरिक्त वैसे ही स्त्री तथा निम्न पात्र भी गृहीत हैं
śaurasenīis Śaurasenī, the Prakrit of the Śūrasena country nominative fem., the dialect being assigned; named for the Mathurā region (Śūrasena)शौरसेनी — शूरसेन (मथुरा) प्रदेश की जो प्राकृत बोली है, वही
prakīrtitāis what the authorities declare [as their speech] past participle, "is proclaimed / laid down" — a settled convention, not Rūpa's own coinageकही गई है / नियत की गई है — यह पहले से चली आ रही परिपाटी है, रूप गोस्वामी की अपनी कल्पना नहीं
tatra api — within Prakrit too; nāyikādīnāṁ — for the heroines and their kind; śaurasenī — Śaurasenī; prakīrtitā — is declared to be their speech.
tatra api — उन प्राकृत भेदों में भी; nāyikādīnāṁ — नायिका आदि पात्रों की वाणी; śaurasenī — शौरसेनी बोली; prakīrtitā — कही गई है।
The earlier kārikā split stage-speech into Sanskrit and Prakrit, and gave Sanskrit to the gods, sages, and hero. Now Rūpa goes one level down, inside Prakrit itself. Prakrit is not one thing; it has dialects. For the heroines and the characters like them, the authorities lay down Śaurasenī — the Prakrit named after the Śūrasena country around Mathurā. So when the nāyikā speaks her lines on stage, she speaks Śaurasenī.
प्राकृत के भीतर भी एक भेद है। नायिका तथा उसके समान अन्य स्त्री एवं निम्न पात्र रंगमंच पर जो बोलते हैं, वह शौरसेनी में कही गई है। शौरसेनी शूरसेन अर्थात् मथुरा प्रदेश की प्राकृत है। यह कोई नई बात नहीं, प्राचीन परिपाटी से नियत है।
A convention inherited from Bharata's Nāṭyaśāstra: Prakrit stage-speech is divided by dialect, and each is fitted to a class of character. Śaurasenī, the dialect of the Śūrasena region (the Mathurā country), is the standard prose Prakrit for women and refined lower characters in their spoken dialogue. The distinction this kārikā sets up — Śaurasenī for speech, Māhārāṣṭrī for song — is completed in the next line.
L2definition
āsām eva tu gāthāsu mahārāṣṭrī smṛtā budhaiḥ ||
āsām evabut for these very same women — the heroines just named genitive picking up nāyikādi from L1; eva = "the very same", stressing that the speaker does not change, only the setting does (from speech to song)इन्हीं की — L1 की नायिका आदि पात्रों को ही उठाते हुए; 'एव' से यह दिखाया कि बोलनेवाली नहीं बदलती, केवल अवसर बदलता है (संवाद से गीत में)
tubut — marking the switch from their spoken lines to a different caseपरन्तु — गीत के अवसर में भेद दिखाने के लिए
gāthāsuwhen it comes to their sung verses, the gāthās locative of the situation — "in the case of / in their songs"; gāthā = a lyric stanza sung, as against ordinary spoken dialogueगाथाओं में / गीतों के अवसर पर — जहाँ साधारण बोलचाल का संवाद नहीं, अपितु गाई जानेवाली गीत-गाथा हो
mahārāṣṭrīis Māhārāṣṭrī, the Prakrit of the Mahārāṣṭra country nominative fem., the second dialect being assigned; the recognized language of Prakrit lyricमहाराष्ट्री — दूसरी नियत बोली; प्राकृत गीत की मानी हुई भाषा
smṛtāis what the wise hand down [as the fitting one] past participle, "is remembered / traditionally taught"मानी गई है / परम्परा से बताई गई है
budhaiḥby the learned, the authorities on drama instrumental of the agent for smṛtā — those who fix the conventionविद्वानों के द्वारा — जो यह परिपाटी नियत करते हैं
āsām eva tu — but for these very same women; gāthāsu — in their sung verses; mahārāṣṭrī — Māhārāṣṭrī; budhaiḥ smṛtā — is handed down by the learned as fitting.
āsām eva — इन्हीं (नायिका आदि) की; tu — परन्तु; gāthāsu — गीतों के अवसर पर; mahārāṣṭrī — महाराष्ट्री बोली; smṛtā — मानी गई है; budhaiḥ — विद्वानों के द्वारा।
The same heroines, though, do not use Śaurasenī everywhere. When they sing — in the gāthās, the lyric stanzas — the wise prescribe a different dialect: Māhārāṣṭrī, the Prakrit of the Mahārāṣṭra country. So the split is by occasion, not by character: one and the same nāyikā speaks her dialogue in Śaurasenī but sings her songs in Māhārāṣṭrī. Māhārāṣṭrī is the dialect the tradition treats as sweetest for verse, which is why it is kept for the sung parts.
वही नायिका आदि पात्र जब गीत गाती हैं, तब उनकी भाषा बदल जाती है। विद्वानों ने कहा है कि इनके गीतों में महाराष्ट्री बोली मानी गई है। बोलनेवाली वही रहती है, केवल अवसर संवाद से गीत में बदलता है, इसलिए भाषा भी बदल जाती है।
Māhārāṣṭrī, the Prakrit of the Mahārāṣṭra region, was regarded in the tradition as the finest medium for Prakrit lyric — Daṇḍin and others call it the best of the Prakrits for poetry. Hence the division of labour this kārikā fixes: women speak Śaurasenī in dialogue (L1) but sing their gāthās in Māhārāṣṭrī (L2). The rule turns on the occasion of speech, not on who is speaking.
tatra api nāyikā-ādīnāṁ śaurasenī prakīrtitā; tu āsām eva gāthāsu budhaiḥ mahārāṣṭrī smṛtā.
tatra api nāyikādīnāṁ (vāṇī) śaurasenī prakīrtitā; āsām eva tu gāthāsu mahārāṣṭrī budhaiḥ smṛtā।
Within Prakrit too, the authorities lay down Śaurasenī — the dialect of the Śūrasena country around Mathurā — as the stage-speech of the heroines and characters like them; but for these very same women, when it comes to their sung gāthās, the learned hand down Māhārāṣṭrī. So one and the same nāyikā speaks her dialogue in Śaurasenī yet sings her songs in Māhārāṣṭrī — the split is by occasion, not by speaker.
A definition kārikā fixing which Prakrit dialect suits the female characters: Śaurasenī for their spoken dialogue, Māhārāṣṭrī for their sung verses.
प्राकृत के भीतर पात्र-भेद से भाषा-नियम निश्चित करनेवाली परिभाषा-कारिका — नायिका आदि की संवाद-भाषा शौरसेनी, गीत-भाषा महाराष्ट्री।
