For instance he says, "So — what are you saying?" — answering words that no one on stage actually spoke. That device is called ākāśa-bhāṣita, "speaking to the air."
'तुम क्या कह रहे हो?' — ऐसा (कह उठे), तो यह आकाश-भाषित कहलाता है।
ākāśa-bhāṣita ("speech in the air"): a stage device by which a single actor represents a conversation with someone who is absent or whose words go unheard. The on-stage character pauses as though listening to an unseen speaker, then replies aloud — "What are you saying?", "Is that so?" — so the audience infers the missing half of the dialogue from his answers. Rūpa's specimen line kiṁ bhaṇasi ("what are you saying?") is the stock cue that marks the device.
