L1definition
vadhena dūrāhvānena yuddha-rājyādi-viplavaiḥ |
vadhenakept free of killing done in view instr. of exclusion; the governing word (vivarjitaḥ, v 117 / vinā kṛtaḥ, v 119) carries over across the runवध (किसी का मारा जाना) — इसके बिना; ऊपर की कारिका का 'vivarjitaḥ' (v ११७) या नीचे का 'vinā kṛtaḥ' (v ११९) यहाँ भी जुड़ता है, अर्थात् अंक इस वध को दिखाए बिना रचा जाता है
dūrāhvānenafree of a summons from far off — calling a character in from a great distance āhvāna = a calling/summons (root hū); distinct from the NŚ list's dūra-adhvan, 'a long journey'दूर से बुलाने (आह्वान) के बिना; यह आह्वान (हू धातु से पुकारना) है, नाट्यशास्त्र की सूची के 'दूर-अध्वन्' (लम्बी यात्रा) से भिन्न
yuddha-rājyādi-viplavaiḥfree of war and the toppling of a kingdom and the likeयुद्ध, राज्य आदि के उपद्रवों (उलट-फेर, विप्लव) के बिना
vadhena — kept free of killing shown in view; dūrāhvānena — of a summons from far off; yuddha-rājyādi-viplavaiḥ — of war and the overthrow of a kingdom and such upheavals; [vivarjitaḥ / vinā kṛtaḥ — devoid of them, the governing word carried from vv 117, 119].
The list of what an aṅka (act) must not stage directly runs on. It shows no killing before the audience. It shows no summoning of a character in from far away. It shows no war, and no toppling of a kingdom or the like. The word 'free of' carries over from the neighbouring verses — these things are reported, not performed.
This is the aṅka-svarūpam — the act defined by exclusion. Rūpa is reproducing the old nāṭya rule that certain events are never enacted on stage but only told of (through connective devices such as the viṣkambhaka and praveśaka): violent, gross, or drawn-out actions would break the mood or cannot be shown convincingly. vv 117-119 list them together; this atom gives the middle stretch.
L2definition
śāpotsarga-vihārābhyāṁ rata-bhojana-mṛtyubhiḥ ||
śāpotsarga-vihārābhyāṁfree of two more — the uttering of a curse, and amorous sport (vihāra) dual -ābhyām = exactly two members, so śāpotsarga is one unit (śāpasya utsargaḥ, 'the letting-out of a curse'), not śāpa + utsarga counted separatelyशाप छोड़ने (शाप देने) और विहार (क्रीड़ा-भ्रमण) — इन दोनों के बिना; द्विवचन (आभ्याम्) से ठीक दो ही सदस्य हैं, इसलिए 'शापोत्सर्ग' एक ही इकाई है (शाप का उत्सर्ग = शाप का छोड़ा जाना), शाप और उत्सर्ग अलग-अलग नहीं गिने जाते
rata-bhojana-mṛtyubhiḥfree of love-making, eating, and dyingरति (सुरत), भोजन तथा मृत्यु के बिना
śāpotsarga-vihārābhyāṁ — of the two: uttering a curse, and amorous sport; rata-bhojana-mṛtyubhiḥ — of love-making, eating, and death; [all likewise excluded, per vv 117, 119].
It shows no pronouncing of a curse and no amorous sport. And it shows no love-making, no eating, and no dying. All of these an act keeps off the stage. They are told of, not acted out.
(aṅkaḥ) vadhena, dūrāhvānena, yuddha-rājyādi-viplavaiḥ, śāpotsarga-vihārābhyām, rata-bhojana-mṛtyubhiḥ (ca) [vivarjitaḥ / vinā kṛtaḥ].
An aṅka (act) is composed free of showing these things directly before the audience: a killing, the summoning of a character in from far off, war and the overthrow of a kingdom and the like, the pronouncing of a curse and amorous sport, and love-making, eating, and dying. The governing word 'free of' carries over from the neighbouring kārikās (vv 117, 119) — all of these are only reported, never enacted on stage.
Continues the aṅka-svarūpam given by exclusion: the middle stretch of the list (vv 117-119) naming events an act must never stage directly but only tell of.
