iti lakṣayanti |

The verse — decoded
L1definition
etad-aṅkāvatāreṇa gatārthatvāt tu kecana |
etad-aṅkāvatāreṇasince this aṅkāvatāra already does the work instrumental of means — the device that accomplishes the pointइस अङ्कावतार के द्वारा
gatārthatvātbecause its purpose is already served, nothing being left over ablative of reasonक्योंकि (आगामी विषय का) अर्थ पहले ही सिद्ध हो चुका है, इस कारण
tubut — marking the shift to this dissenting viewपरन्तु
kecanasome [scholars] hold (subject, taken up as budhāḥ in the next line)कुछ (विद्वान् इस प्रकार मानते हैं)
etad-aṅkāvatāreṇa — since this aṅkāvatāra already does the work; gatārthatvāt — because its purpose is already served; tu — but; kecana — some hold [that…]
But some scholars point out that aṅka-mukha's job is already done by the aṅkāvatāra. Since the point is fully conveyed there, nothing is left over for aṅka-mukha to accomplish.
aṅkāvatāra and aṅka-mukha are both arthopakṣepakas — brief devices that hint from the stage at matter to come. The aṅkāvatāra, defined earlier, lets the next act 'descend' directly out of the close of this one; the objection here is that once it has done its work there is no separate work for an aṅka-mukha.

prathamoktārtham evedaṁ vadanty aṅka-mukhaṁ budhāḥ ||
prathama-ukta-arthamto be nothing but the point already stated first [in the aṅkāvatāra] accusative predicate of idamजिसका अर्थ पहले ही कह दिया गया है — ऐसा

aṅka-mukhamaṅka-mukha — the device being identifiedअङ्कमुख (नामक उपाय को)
budhāḥthe learned (subject, in apposition with kecana above)विद्वान् लोग
budhāḥ — the learned; idam aṅka-mukham — this aṅka-mukha; prathamokta-artham eva — to be nothing but the point already stated first; vadanti — declare it [to be].
So the learned say this aṅka-mukha is really nothing but what the aṅkāvatāra has already stated. In other words, it is not a separate device at all — it merely repeats the point already made, and so need not be counted on its own.
This records the view of 'some' (kecana / budhāḥ) that aṅka-mukha collapses into aṅkāvatāra: since the earlier device already intimates the coming matter, aṅka-mukha adds nothing and is not reckoned a distinct arthopakṣepaka. Rūpa reports the position rather than legislating it.
etad-aṅkāvatāreṇa gatārthatvāt tu kecana budhāḥ idam aṅka-mukham prathama-ukta-artham eva vadanti.
tu kecana budhāḥ etad-aṅkāvatāreṇa gatārthatvāt idam aṅka-mukham prathama-ukta-artham eva vadanti।
But because its purpose is already fully served by this aṅkāvatāra, some learned scholars declare that this aṅka-mukha is nothing but the point already stated first — leaving it no separate work of its own to do.
Following the lead-in 'iti lakṣayanti', the kārikā reports the dissenting view (kecana / budhāḥ) that aṅka-mukha is not a distinct arthopakṣepaka but collapses into the already-defined aṅkāvatāra.
