The verse — decoded
L1definition
śuddhaḥ kevala-madhye’yam ekâneka-kṛto bhavet |
śuddhaḥthe śuddha ('pure') viṣkambhaka — the first of the two kinds named in the last kārikā masc. nom., subject; resumes śuddha from nc.8.98शुद्ध (विष्कम्भक) — यही कर्ता है, पूर्व कारिका (nc.8.98) से चला आया
kevala-madhyecarried by middling characters alone (kevala-madhya) — only madhyama-pātras, with no low character mixed in loc. of sphere, marking the class within which it is done; this exclusiveness is what keeps it 'pure'केवल मध्यम पात्रों के बीच (सप्तमी, क्षेत्र दिखाती है); इसी विशिष्टता से वह 'शुद्ध' बना रहता है
ayamthis [pure kind] masc. nom., pointing back to śuddhaḥयह (शुद्ध की ओर संकेत करता हुआ)
eka-aneka-kṛtaḥis performed by one such character or by several (eka … aneka) — the number of middling speakers may vary bahuvrīhi, nom. masc. agreeing with ayam; eka 'one' vs aneka 'many'एक अथवा अनेक पात्रों के द्वारा किया हुआ (बहुव्रीहि, अयम् का विशेषण)
bhavetmay be, can occur opt.
śuddhaḥ ayam — this is the pure kind; kevala-madhye — among middling characters alone; eka-aneka-kṛtaḥ — made by one or by several; bhavet — it may be.
Now Rūpa fills out the śuddha, the 'pure' viṣkambhaka named in the last kārikā. It is run by middling characters (madhyama) alone — no low character mixed in, which is what keeps it 'pure'. And it can be done by a single middling character or by several of them together — eka or aneka. Either way it stays śuddha, since only madhyama-pātras take part.
viṣkambhaka is one of the arthopakṣepakas of the Nāṭyaśāstra — the introductory devices that report offstage or intervening events. The previous kārikā (nc.8.98) split it into śuddha ('pure', madhyama-pātras alone) and miśra ('mixed', nīca and madhyama together). This line adds that the śuddha does not depend on the number of speakers: one middling character or many may carry it, and it is still 'pure' so long as no low character joins.

vinirmito bahutrāyaṁ tasmin lalita-mādhave ||
vinirmitaḥhas been composed, worked out [as an example] nom. masc. past part., agreeing with ayamरचा गया है / निर्मित है (नामवाची भूतकृदन्त, अयम् से अन्वय)
bahutrāin many places, again and again adverb, 'in many spots' — stressing that instances are plentifulअनेक स्थानों पर (क्रियाविशेषण — उदाहरण प्रचुर हैं, यह जताता है)
ayamthis [śuddha kind] masc. nom., still the śuddha viṣkambhaka of L1यह (वही L1 का शुद्ध विष्कम्भक)
tasmin lalita-mādhavein that Lalita-Mādhava — Rūpa's own play loc., naming where the examples are to be foundउस ललित-माधव में (सप्तमी, जहाँ उदाहरण मिलते हैं)
ayam — this pure kind; tasmin lalita-mādhave — in that Lalita-Mādhava; bahutrā — in many places; vinirmitaḥ — has been composed.
Rūpa now points to where the śuddha can be seen at work. This pure kind, he says, is composed in many places — again and again — in that Lalita-Mādhava, his own play. So rather than quote a single specimen here, he sends the student to the play itself, where śuddha viṣkambhakas turn up repeatedly.
Rather than adducing an outside illustration, Rūpa self-cites his own Lalita-Mādhava as the standing source of examples for the śuddha viṣkambhaka. The pairing is deliberate: the miśra kind he illustrated from the Vidagdha-Mādhava in the last kārikā (nc.8.99), and the śuddha he now refers wholesale to the Lalita-Mādhava.
ayam śuddhaḥ [viṣkambhakaḥ] kevala-madhye eka-aneka-kṛtaḥ bhavet; ayaṁ [ca] tasmin lalita-mādhave bahutrā vinirmitaḥ [asti].
kevala-madhye ayam śuddhaḥ (विष्कम्भकः) eka-aneka-kṛtaḥ bhavet, (yaḥ ca) ayam tasmin lalita-mādhave bahutrā vinirmitaḥ (अस्ति)।
This 'pure' (śuddha) viṣkambhaka is one that runs among middling characters alone, and it may be carried by a single such character or by several of them together; and this pure kind Rūpa has composed again and again, in many places, in his own Lalita-Mādhava.
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the śuddha viṣkambhaka: it admits both one and many madhyama speakers, and he self-cites the Lalita-Mādhava as its standing source of examples.
