The verse — decoded
L1definition
amukhya-pātraiḥ saṅkṣepād ādāv aṅkasya darśitaḥ |
amukhya-pātraiḥperformed by non-principal characters (amukhya-pātra) — not the hero or heroine, but middling and lower figures instr. pl. of agent with the passive darśitaḥगौण अर्थात् अप्रधान पात्रों के द्वारा (यही कर्ता हैं, जिनसे यह दिखाया जाता है)

ādau aṅkasyaat the opening of an act ādau loc. 'at the beginning'; aṅkasya gen. 'of the act'अंक के आरम्भ में
darśitaḥ[the viṣkambha] is set on stage, shown to the audience masc. nom. past part., agreeing with the viṣkambhaka carried over from the previous kārikā (picked up as sa in L2)दिखाया गया, प्रदर्शित किया गया (यह विष्कम्भक का विशेषण है)
amukhya-pātraiḥ — by non-principal characters; saṅkṣepāt — in brief; ādau aṅkasya — at the opening of an act; darśitaḥ — [the viṣkambha] is shown.
Here Rūpa fills out the viṣkambha begun in the last kārikā. It is put before the audience at the very opening of an act. It is done briefly — a short, compressed scene. And it is carried by non-principal characters (amukhya-pātra), that is, by middling and lower figures, not by the hero or heroine themselves.
viṣkambha (also viṣkambhaka) is one of the arthopakṣepakas of the Nāṭyaśāstra — the introductory devices that report offstage or intervening events. This line supplies its staging: brief, at an act's opening, in the mouths of secondary characters. The next line divides it into two kinds by exactly which class of secondary character speaks it.
L2definition
sa śuddho miśra ity ukto miśraḥ syān nīca-madhyamaiḥ ||
sathat viṣkambha [just described] masc. nom., resuming darśitaḥ / viṣkambhaka from L1वह (L1 का 'darśitaḥ' अर्थात् विष्कम्भक ही यहाँ फिर से उठाया गया)
śuddhaḥ miśraḥ iti uktaḥis declared to be of two kinds — śuddha ('pure') and miśra ('mixed') iti marks the two names; uktaḥ, 'is called', governs both'शुद्ध' और 'मिश्र' — इन दो नामों से कहा जाता है ('iti' दोनों नामों को घेरता है, 'uktaḥ' दोनों पर लागू)
miśraḥ syātit would be the miśra kind syāt optative, stating the condition that followsमिश्र तब होता है (जब — आगे की शर्त 'syāt' विधि से कही गई)
nīca-madhyamaiḥwhen it is performed by low and middling characters together (nīca and madhyama) instr. pl. of agent; the mix of the two classes is what makes it 'mixed'नीच और मध्यम पात्रों के द्वारा (इन दो श्रेणियों का मेल ही इसे 'मिश्र' बनाता है)
sa — that viṣkambha; śuddhaḥ miśraḥ iti uktaḥ — is called śuddha and miśra; miśraḥ syāt — it would be miśra; nīca-madhyamaiḥ — when performed by low and middling characters.
That viṣkambha comes in two kinds, called śuddha ('pure') and miśra ('mixed'). Which one it is depends on who speaks it. When it is carried by low and middling characters together — nīca and madhyama both — it is the miśra, the mixed kind. By implication the śuddha, the pure kind, is the one run by the middling characters alone, with no low character mixed in.
The two names divide the viṣkambha by the rank of its speakers: śuddha ('unmixed') is voiced by madhyama-pātras alone, while miśra ('mixed') sets nīca and madhyama side by side — the very mixing of classes gives the second kind its name. This is the received dramaturgical distinction (Nāṭyaśāstra); the kārikā states the miśra side explicitly and leaves the śuddha side to be read off from it.
aṅkasya ādau amukhya-pātraiḥ saṅkṣepāt darśitaḥ [viṣkambhakaḥ] śuddhaḥ miśraḥ iti [dvividhaḥ] uktaḥ; [tayoḥ] saḥ nīca-madhyamaiḥ [darśyamānaḥ] miśraḥ syāt.
The viṣkambha that is set before the audience at the very opening of an act, briefly, and through non-principal characters, is said to be of two kinds — śuddha ('pure') and miśra ('mixed'). Of these, it is the miśra kind when it is carried by low and middling characters together; the śuddha, by implication, is the one run by the middling characters alone.
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the viṣkambha(ka): it fixes the device's staging — brief, at an act's opening, in the mouths of secondary characters — and then divides it into śuddha and miśra by the rank of those speakers.
