sahasaivārtha-sampattir guṇavaty upacārataḥ |
sahasāsuddenly, all at onceसहसा — अकस्मात्, एकाएक
evaprecisely — pressing the suddenness: it happens right then, unprepared sahasā + eva = sahasaiva; eva fixes the 'sudden' as the defining markही — यही 'अकस्मात्' होना इसका निश्चायक लक्षण है
artha-sampattiḥthe aim of the scene is accomplished — the case being defined artha 'the object, the purpose' + sampatti 'attainment, coming-to-fruition'अभीष्ट प्रयोजन की सिद्धि — इच्छित अर्थ का सफल हो जाना
guṇavatīand it is a fine, felicitous one — describing that accomplishment feminine, agreeing with artha-sampattiḥ; guṇavat 'possessed of excellence'गुणवती — उत्कर्ष से युक्त (अर्थ-सम्पत्ति के साथ स्त्रीलिंग में अन्वित)
upacārataḥcoming about through a figurative, suggestive turn of words -taḥ adverbial, 'by way of, through'; upacāra = indirect/figurative usage, words that carry a further apt senseउपचार के द्वारा — किसी सूचक, आलंकारिक प्रयोग के माध्यम से
sahasā eva — suddenly, all at once; artha-sampattiḥ — the aim is accomplished; guṇavatī — and it is a fine one; upacārataḥ — through a figurative, suggestive turn.
This is the Nāṭya-śāstra's own definition, which Rūpa now quotes. Take a scene where the object in view gets accomplished suddenly, all at once — nothing led up to it. And it is a felicitous, well-turned accomplishment, not a clumsy one. And the way it lands is through upacāra, a figurative, indirect turn of words that quietly carries the point. That combination is what is being defined here.
Why cited: Quoted from the Nāṭya-śāstra (19.31) to supply the lakṣaṇa of the first patākā-sthānaka — the type that 188 (v087) counted as first of the fourfold set; 189q1 (v089) then illustrates it from the Lalita-Mādhava, act 7.
Two technical terms. patākā-sthānaka: a 'banner-mark' of dramaturgy — an incidental turn in the subordinate plot-strand (patākā) that suddenly foreshadows or advances the main aim. upacāra: figurative, indirect usage — words that carry a further, apt sense beyond their surface. So the first type is a sudden, felicitous hitting of the mark brought off through such a suggestive turn.

The closing line files what was just described. This, they proclaim, is the first patākā-sthānaka — number one of the fourfold set Rūpa laid out in 187-188.
Why cited: Same Nāṭya-śāstra citation (19.31), closing line — it registers the just-defined case as the first of the four patākā-sthānakas.
(yatra) upacārataḥ sahasā eva guṇavatī artha-sampattiḥ (bhavati), idaṁ prathamaṁ patākā-sthānakaṁ parikīrtitam.
When, through a figurative, suggestive turn of words, the aim of the scene is brought to fruition suddenly, all at once — and a felicitous, well-turned fruition at that — this is proclaimed to be the first patākā-sthānaka.
Nāṭya-śāstra (19.31), quoted to supply the lakṣaṇa of the first of the four patākā-sthānakas listed in 187-188 (illustrated next at 189q1 from the Lalita-Mādhava).
