L1definition
manorathas tu vyājena vivakṣita-nivedanam ||
manorathaḥmanoratha — the sandhy-aṅga (limb of a dramatic juncture) now being defined; the word being explainedमनोरथ (मन का रथ, अर्थात् हृदय की अभिलाषा) नामक सन्ध्यंग
tunow, on the other hand — turns from the limb just treated (kṣobha, or saṅkṣepa on the alternate reading) to this next oneपरन्तु (पूर्व अंग से हटकर अब इस अंग की ओर)
vyājenaby means of a pretext — not stated outright, but wrapped in some pretense or occasion instrumental of means: the how of the making-knownकिसी बहाने के द्वारा, अर्थात् छल-रूप उपाय से
vivakṣita-nivedanamis the getting-across of what one wishes to say — vivakṣita is the thing one desires to speak; nivedana is announcing or making it knownजो कहना अभीष्ट है उस अभिप्राय का निवेदन कर देना
manorathaḥ tu — now manoratha; vyājena — by means of a pretext; vivakṣita-nivedanam — is the making-known of what one wishes to say.
Now the limb called manoratha. Manoratha is this: you get across the very thing you want to say — but by a pretext, not by saying it plainly. The real message is delivered under cover of some pretense or occasion, not stated straight out.
This kārikā is the lakṣaṇa (defining verse) of manoratha, the sandhy-aṅga named as this subsection's topic; the line is quoted (origin: quoted), a borrowed definition Rūpa adopts here. The word manoratha literally means 'chariot of the mind', i.e. a heartfelt wish or longing; as a dramaturgical term it names this device of voicing that wish obliquely. The 'tu' marks the shift from the preceding limb (kṣobha, agitation — or saṅkṣepa on the variant reading discussed in the lead-in) to manoratha. The illustration follows: Kṛṣṇa's speech and verse from the eighth act (aṣṭame), where he conveys his real appeal to his beloved through a pretext.
manorathaḥ tu vyājena vivakṣita-nivedanam (bhavati).
The dramatic limb called manoratha, on the other hand, is the getting-across of the very thing one wishes to say — accomplished by means of a pretext, so that the real message is delivered under cover of some pretense rather than stated plainly.
The lakṣaṇa (defining verse) of the sandhy-aṅga manoratha, quoted here: it defines the limb as voicing one's intended message obliquely, through a pretext — to be illustrated next by Kṛṣṇa's speech and verse from the eighth act.
