The verse — decoded
L1example
matir aghūrṇata sārdham ali-vrajaiḥ
matiḥmy mind, my thought nominative, first of the three inner faculties heaped in parallel across the verseमेरा मन (मति) — जो तीन भीतरी भावों में पहला है, कर्ता के रूप में रखा गया
aghūrṇatareeled, spun round and round imperfect of ā-ghūrṇ — to whirl, sway giddily; the verb of line 1घूमने लगा, चक्कर खाने लगा (आ-घूर्ण् धातु का अनद्यतन भूत — पहली पंक्ति की क्रिया)
sārdhamtogether with — the first of three synonyms for 'along with' governs the instrumental ali-vrajaiḥ; sārdham / saha (L2) / samam (L4) are the heaped like-meaning wordsके साथ — तृतीया का शासक; 'सार्धम्' (यहाँ), 'सह' (दूसरी पंक्ति), 'समम्' (चौथी पंक्ति) — ये तीनों समान अर्थवाले शब्द हैं
ali-vrajaiḥwith the swarms of bees instrumental plural, the spring-thing paired with matiḥ — bees whirling round the blossomsभौंरों के झुंडों के साथ — तृतीया बहुवचन; मति के साथ जोड़ा गया वसन्त का पदार्थ (फूलों पर मँडराते भ्रमर)
matiḥ — my mind; ali-vrajaiḥ sārdham — together with the swarms of bees; aghūrṇata — reeled and spun round
matiḥ — मन; aghūrṇata — घूमने लगा; sārdham — के साथ; ali-vrajaiḥ — भौंरों के झुंडों के साथ।
My mind reeled, spinning round and round — right along with the swarms of bees. As the bees whirl giddily over the spring flowers, so my thought whirls. This is Kṛṣṇa speaking, undone by separation. The bees outside and the mind within move as one.
मेरा मन भौंरों के झुंडों के साथ चक्कर खाने लगा। जैसे भ्रमर फूलों पर मँडराते हुए घूमते हैं, वैसे ही मेरा मन भी घूम उठा।
An udāharaṇa of padoccaya, 'word-heaping', the ornament defined at 167: bahūnāṁ tu prayuktānāṁ padānāṁ bahubhiḥ padaiḥ | uccayaḥ sadṛśārtho yaḥ sa vijñeyaḥ padoccayaḥ — 'when many employed words are heaped up by many further words of similar meaning, that is padoccaya.' Here the heaping runs on two levels: three inner faculties (mati 'mind', dhṛti 'steadiness', utkalikā 'longing') are each set beside a spring-thing (bee-swarms, honey, buds) in three parallel clauses, and the three 'together-with' words — sārdham, saha, samam — are themselves the like-meaning words heaped up (sadṛśārtha). Rūpa's own analysis of this verse names the device: matyādīnāṁ ghūrṇādi-kriyāsu ali-vrajādibhiḥ samāveśāt, 'because mind and the rest are combined with bee-swarms and the rest in the actions of whirling and the rest.' Cited from the fourth act (yathā caturthe) of Rūpa's own Lalita-Mādhava (4.21), spoken by Kṛṣṇa in the pain of viraha.

dhṛtir abhūn madhubhiḥ saha vicyutā |
dhṛtiḥmy steadiness, my composure nominative, the second heaped faculty, parallel to matiḥ of L1मेरी धृति (धैर्य) — कर्ता में; दूसरा भीतरी भाव, पहली पंक्ति के मति के समानान्तर
abhūtbecame aorist of bhū (abhūn by sandhi before m-); links dhṛtiḥ to the predicate vicyutāहो गई (भू धातु का लुङ्; म् से पूर्व सन्धि से 'अभून्') — धृति को विधेय 'विच्युता' से जोड़ता है
madhubhiḥ sahatogether with the honey — the second 'along with' word (saha) instrumental plural + saha; madhu = the honey/nectar of the spring blossoms (with the ring of madhu, springtime, behind it)मधु के साथ — तृतीया बहुवचन के साथ 'सह'; मधु अर्थात् वसन्त के फूलों का मकरन्द (पीछे 'मधु' वसन्त का भी ध्वनि है)
vicyutāslipped away, fell off past participle, feminine, predicate of dhṛtiḥ — as the honey drips and slips from the flowersछूट गई, गिर पड़ी (स्त्रीलिङ्ग भूत कृदन्त, धृति का विधेय) — जैसे फूलों से मधु टपककर बह जाता है
dhṛtiḥ — my steadiness; madhubhiḥ saha — together with the honey; vicyutā abhūt — slipped away and was gone
dhṛtiḥ — धृति (धैर्य); abhūt — हो गई; madhubhiḥ saha — मधु के साथ; vicyutā — छूट गई (गिर पड़ी)।
My steadiness slipped away and was gone — right along with the honey. As the honey drips loose and falls from the spring blossoms, so my composure fell away. The outer trickle and the inner collapse run together. Note the second 'together-with' word, saha, echoing the sārdham of the first line.
मेरी धृति मधु के साथ छूट गई। जैसे फूलों से मधु टपककर बह जाता है, वैसे ही मेरा धैर्य भी बहकर जाता रहा।
Why cited: part of the udāharaṇa of padoccaya (167): the second heaped clause — steadiness paired with the honey, with saha as the second of the three like-meaning 'along with' words.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह पदोच्चय (१६७) के उदाहरण का दूसरा भाग है — धैर्य को मधु के साथ जोड़ा गया दूसरा वाक्य, जिसमें 'सह' तीनों 'साथ-साथ' समान अर्थवाले शब्दों में दूसरा है।

vyakasad utkalikā kalikālibhiḥ
vyakasatblossomed open, unfolded imperfect of vi-kas, to open out; vyakasad by sandhi — the verb of line 3खिल उठी, प्रफुल्लित हो गई (वि-कस् धातु का अनद्यतन भूत; सन्धि से 'व्यकसद्') — तीसरी पंक्ति की क्रिया
utkalikāmy eager longing, my yearning nominative, the third heaped faculty; sound-plays on the kalikā 'buds' that followमेरी उत्कण्ठा (उत्कलिका) — कर्ता में; तीसरा भीतरी भाव; आगे आने वाली 'कलिका' (कलियाँ) के साथ शब्द-साम्य है
kalikā-ālibhiḥwith the rows of flower-buds instrumental plural (kalikā 'bud' + āli 'row, line'); its 'together-with' word, samam, waits at the head of L4कलियों की पंक्तियों के साथ — तृतीया बहुवचन (कलिका 'कली' + आलि 'पंक्ति, कतार); इसका 'साथ' वाला शब्द 'समम्' चौथी पंक्ति के आरम्भ में प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है
utkalikā — my longing; kalikā-ālibhiḥ (samam, L4) — together with the rows of flower-buds; vyakasat — blossomed open
vyakasat — खिल उठी; utkalikā — उत्कण्ठा; kalikā-ālibhiḥ — कलियों की पंक्तियों के साथ।
My longing blossomed wide open — right along with the rows of flower-buds. As the buds unfurl, so my yearning unfurls. Hear the sound-play: utkalikā, 'longing', chiming against kalikā, 'bud' — the very echo enacts the heaping. The word that pairs them, samam 'together with', opens the next line.
मेरी उत्कण्ठा कलियों की पंक्तियों के साथ खिल उठी। जैसे कलियाँ पंक्ति-दर-पंक्ति खिलती हैं, वैसे ही मेरी उत्कण्ठा भी फूट पड़ी।
Why cited: part of the udāharaṇa of padoccaya (167): the third heaped clause — longing paired with the buds — where even the sound of utkalikā and kalikā is heaped alike.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह पदोच्चय (१६७) के उदाहरण का तीसरा भाग है — उत्कण्ठा को कलियों के साथ जोड़ा गया तीसरा वाक्य, जहाँ 'उत्कलिका' और 'कलिका' की ध्वनि तक एक समान ढेर की गई है।

samam iha priyayā viyutasya me
samamtogether with — the third 'along with' word, completing line 3's pairing goes with kalikā-ālibhiḥ of L3; sārdham / saha / samam are the three like-meaning words heaped (the padoccaya)के साथ — तीसरी पंक्ति के 'कलिका-आलिभिः' से जुड़ता है; सार्धम् / सह / समम् — तीनों समान अर्थवाले शब्द जिनका उच्चय हुआ (यही पदोच्चय)
ihahere, in this state nowयहाँ, इस समय
priyayā viyutasyaseparated from my beloved viyuta 'parted' takes the instrumental priyayā 'from the beloved'; genitive agreeing with meप्रिया से बिछुड़े हुए (के) — 'वियुत' (बिछुड़ा) तृतीया 'प्रियया' (प्रिया से) लेता है; 'मे' से अन्वित षष्ठी
meof me — whose mind, steadiness, and longing these all are genitive framing the whole verse: the three faculties of L1–L3 belong to this separated 'me'मुझ (का), मेरे — षष्ठी जो सारे श्लोक को बाँधती है; पहली से तीसरी पंक्ति के तीनों भाव इसी विरही 'मुझ' के हैं
iha priyayā viyutasya me — of me here, separated from my beloved; samam (kalikā-ālibhiḥ, L3) — together with the rows of buds
samam — साथ; iha — यहाँ; priyayā viyutasya — प्रिया से बिछुड़े हुए (के); me — मुझ (का)।
All this is of me — here, separated from my beloved. Line four is the frame: the reeling mind, the fallen steadiness, the blossoming longing all belong to Kṛṣṇa, parted from Rādhā. And samam, 'together with', ties longing to the buds, closing the third pairing. Three faculties, three spring-things, three synonyms for 'along with' — the words heaped up on words of like meaning that make this padoccaya.
यहाँ प्रिया से बिछुड़े हुए मुझ विरही के — ये तीनों भाव घटित हुए। मन, धैर्य और उत्कण्ठा, तीनों उसी की हैं जो प्रिया से अलग हो गया है।
Why cited: the closing line of the udāharaṇa of padoccaya (167): the genitive 'me, separated from my beloved' that frames all three heaped clauses, with samam as the third of the like-meaning 'along with' words.
क्यों उद्धृत: यह पदोच्चय (१६७) के उदाहरण की अन्तिम पंक्ति है — षष्ठी 'प्रिया से बिछुड़े मुझ' जो तीनों उच्चित वाक्यों को एक सूत्र में बाँधती है, और 'समम्' तीनों 'साथ-साथ' समान अर्थवाले शब्दों में तीसरा है।
iha priyayā viyutasya me matiḥ ali-vrajaiḥ sārdham aghūrṇata, dhṛtiḥ madhubhiḥ saha vicyutā abhūt, utkalikā kalikā-ālibhiḥ samam vyakasat.
इह priyayā viyutasya me matiḥ ali-vrajaiḥ sārdham aghūrṇata, dhṛtiḥ madhubhiḥ saha vicyutā abhūt, utkalikā kalikā-ālibhiḥ samam vyakasat।
Parted now from my beloved, I feel it all at once: my mind has reeled and spun round, right along with the swarms of bees; my steadiness has slipped away and fallen, right along with the honey; and my longing has blossomed wide open, right along with the rows of flower-buds. As the bees whirl, the honey drips loose, and the buds unfold outside, so within me the three faculties whirl, fall, and unfold together.
यहाँ प्रिया से बिछुड़े हुए मुझ विरही का मन भौंरों के झुंडों के साथ चक्कर खाने लगा, मेरा धैर्य फूलों के मधु के साथ छूटकर बह गया, और मेरी उत्कण्ठा कलियों की पंक्तियों के साथ खिल उठी — मन घूमता भ्रमर सा, धैर्य टपकता मधु सा, और उत्कण्ठा फूटती कली सी हो गई।
An udāharaṇa of padoccaya (167), 'word-heaping': three inner faculties (mati, dhṛti, utkalikā) are each yoked to a spring-thing across three parallel clauses, and the three like-meaning 'along-with' words — sārdham, saha, samam — are themselves heaped up; cited from Rūpa's own Lalita-Mādhava (4.21), spoken by Kṛṣṇa in viraha.
विरह का उदाहरण-श्लोक, जिसमें 'सार्धम्-सह-समम्' का पदोच्चय तीन भीतरी भावों को वसन्त के तीन पदार्थों से जोड़ता है।
