abhūta-arthaḥstates a meaning that never actually happened; a fiction abhūta 'not real, not having occurred' + artha 'meaning, content'जिसका विषय वस्तुतः घटित नहीं हुआ, अर्थात् अवास्तविक अर्थवाला
hṛdyaḥyet pleasing, going straight to the heartहृदय को प्रिय लगनेवाला

abhiprāyaḥ — the ornament abhiprāya; tu — now; sāmyena — out of a resemblance; kalpitaḥ — invented; abhūta-arthaḥ — an unreal meaning; hṛdyaḥ — that is yet pleasing.
Now abhiprāya. Its content is not something that literally happened — it is a fiction. But it is hṛdya, pleasing, it touches the heart. And it is built up out of a likeness: you take one thing and, by its resemblance to another, imagine a meaning that isn't factually there but rings true and delights.
abhiprāya is one of the ṣaṭ-triṁśad-bhūṣaṇāni, the thirty-six ornaments of dramatic speech named across kārikās v017–v020 and then defined one at a time; this kārikā gives its lakṣaṇa (defining mark).

Others define abhiprāya quite differently. For them it is mamatā — a sense of 'this is mine,' a possessive attachment — felt toward some dear, heart-pleasing object. Rūpa records this second view without deciding between it and his own: both readings are left standing.

As for the ornament called abhiprāya: its content is something that never actually happened — a fiction, yet one that is hṛdya, pleasing and going straight to the heart, and it is built up out of a resemblance, so that from the likeness of one thing to another a meaning is imagined that is not factually there but rings true and delights. Other authorities, however, define abhiprāya otherwise: for them it is mamatā, a sense of 'this is mine,' a possessive attachment felt toward some cherished, heart-pleasing object.
Defines the ornament abhiprāya (one of the thirty-six bhūṣaṇas of dramatic speech) — a pleasing fiction built on resemblance — and then records without deciding a second view that calls it possessive attachment toward a dear object.
