The verse — decoded
L1definition
aniścayāt tu yad vākyaṁ sandehasya nigadyate ||
aniścayātbecause the matter is left unsettled — arising out of not being able to fix it either way ablative of cause; aniścaya, 'non-determination,' is the exact opposite of the niścaya ('settling') that defined hetv-avadhāraṇa — this is the load-bearing wordक्योंकि बात निश्चित नहीं होती — अनिश्चय के कारण; यही अनिश्चय हेत्ववधारण के निश्चय का ठीक उलटा है
tubut by contrast — setting doubt against the settled determination just definedपरन्तु (पूर्वोक्त हेत्ववधारण से भेद दिखाने के लिए)
yat vākyaṁthe speech that — whatever utterance a character lets fall nom.; correlative subject, picked up by the implied tat, 'that,' before sandehasyaजो वाक्य — यह कर्ता है, जिसे आगे 'उस' (तत्) से पकड़ा जाता है
sandehasyais declared as belonging to sandeha — as constituting the limb called 'doubt' gen.; the vākya is declared 'of sandeha,' i.e. it is what makes up the sandhy-aṅga sandehaसन्देह का — अर्थात् जो वाक्य सन्देह नामक सन्ध्यंग बनता है
nigadyateis declared to be — so the authorities term it ni-√gad, passive; a received term Rūpa reports rather than coinsकहा जाता है — यह प्रचलित संज्ञा है, जिसे रूप गोस्वामी गढ़ते नहीं, केवल दुहराते हैं
yat vākyaṁ — the speech that; aniścayāt tu — but out of the matter being unsettled [is uttered]; [tat] sandehasya — that as belonging to sandeha; nigadyate — is declared to be.
Now sandeha, 'doubt,' is defined. When a character cannot fix a matter either way and speaks out of that unsettledness, the utterance so let fall is declared to be the limb sandeha. The word tu points the contrast: the limb just defined, hetv-avadhāraṇa, was a settling of the matter (niścaya) by a reason; this one is its mirror image — it springs from aniścaya, no settling at all. So the two limbs are told apart by their logical root: one voices a conclusion reached, the other voices a doubt not yet resolved.
sandeha (also called saṁśaya, the heading of this subsection — the two are synonyms for 'doubt') is one of the sandhy-aṅgas, the limbs that make up the junctures of a play. It names the beat where a speech gives voice to a character's uncertainty. Rūpa defines it not by content but by its source — aniścaya, the matter's not being settled — pairing it as the exact counterpart of hetv-avadhāraṇa, the reasoned settling defined earlier.
aniścayāt tu yat vākyaṁ [ucyate, tat] sandehasya [aṅgatvena] nigadyate.
But the utterance that a character lets fall out of a matter left unsettled — that is declared to be the limb sandeha, 'doubt.'
Defines the sandhy-aṅga sandeha ('doubt') by its source — aniścaya, the matter's not being settled — setting it as the mirror-opposite of the reasoned hetv-avadhāraṇa defined just before (tu).
