L1definition
sa hetur iti nirdiṣṭo yat sādhyārtha-prasādhakam ||
saḥthat [ornament] is — pointing ahead to the yat-clause that will say which one (correlative) nominative correlative, answered by yat belowवह (जो आगे 'यत्' से कहा जाएगा उसका प्रतिनिर्देश)
hetuḥ itigoes by the name 'hetu' ('the reason') iti marks the name being assigned to it'हेतु' — इस नाम से ('इति' यह नाम रखने का सूचक है)
nirdiṣṭaḥis designated, is laid down asकहा गया है, नामांकित किया गया है
yatnamely, whatever it is that — (the relative that fills in 'that')जो (वाक्य)
sādhyārtha-prasādhakambrings about the point it is out to establish — effects the sādhya-artha, the aim the speech means to secure sādhya 'to be accomplished / established' + artha 'aim, point' + prasādhaka 'that which effects, brings about'सिद्ध करने योग्य अर्थ (साध्य प्रयोजन) को सिद्ध कर देने वाला हो
yat sādhya-artha-prasādhakam — whatever effects the aim to be accomplished; saḥ hetuḥ iti nirdiṣṭaḥ — that is designated 'hetu'.
This defines the ornament called hetu, 'the reason'. Take any piece of dramatic speech that brings about the very aim it is reaching for — the sādhya-artha, the point the speaker wants to secure. That is what is designated 'hetu'. In short: hetu is the ornament in which the words themselves supply the reason that accomplishes their intended point.
hetu is one of the thirty-six bhūṣaṇas (ornaments of dramatic speech) whose list is given at nc.8.20 (v020). It follows akṣara-saṅghāta, defined just before at nc.8.23 and illustrated at nc.8.24. As an ornament, hetu names speech that carries its own effecting reason — the words bring about (prasādhaka) the aim to be established (sādhya-artha).
yat sādhya-artha-prasādhakam, saḥ hetuḥ iti nirdiṣṭaḥ.
Whatever speech brings about the very aim it is reaching for — the sādhya-artha, the point the speaker means to secure — that is designated 'hetu', the reason.
Rūpa's defining kārikā for the bhūṣaṇa called hetu: dramatic speech whose own words supply the reason that accomplishes their intended aim.
