The verse — decoded
L1definition
guṇālaṅkāra-bahulaṁ bhāṣaṇaṁ bhūṣaṇaṁ smṛtam ||
guṇālaṅkāra-bahulaṁpacked with poetic excellences (guṇa) and figures of speech (alaṅkāra) bahula, 'abounding in' — adjective agreeing with bhāṣaṇaṁ (acc. neut.); the two members are guṇa (qualities like sweetness, clarity) and alaṅkāra (ornaments of sound and sense)गुण (माधुर्य, प्रसाद आदि काव्य-गुण) और अलंकार (शब्द तथा अर्थ के अलंकार) — इन दोनों से भरा हुआ; भाषण का विशेषण
bhāṣaṇaṁa speech, an utterance on stage the thing being classified — subject of smṛtamवचन, कथन — जिसका यहाँ लक्षण किया जा रहा है (स्मृतम् का कर्ता)
bhūṣaṇaṁas 'bhūṣaṇa' (the ornament-limb) — the term now being defined predicate — 'is regarded as bhūṣaṇa'भूषण नामक (सन्धि-अंग) — यही विधेय है
smṛtamis what the tradition calls it smṛta, √smṛ — 'is taught, is handed down as'माना गया है, परम्परा से कहा गया है (√स्मृ)
guṇālaṅkāra-bahulaṁ — packed with excellences and figures; bhāṣaṇaṁ — a speech; bhūṣaṇaṁ [iti] — as 'bhūṣaṇa'; smṛtam — the tradition calls it.
Here bhūṣaṇa, 'the ornament,' is defined. A stage-speech that comes loaded with poetic excellences (guṇa) and figures of speech (alaṅkāra) is what the tradition calls bhūṣaṇa. So the name is not about a physical ornament but about speech that is itself an ornament — richly worded and beautifully turned.
bhūṣaṇa: literally 'ornament, adornment.' As a dramaturgical term (a sandhy-aṅga, a limb of a dramatic juncture) it names not a jewel but a kind of speech — one crowded with guṇas (poetic virtues such as sweetness and clarity) and alaṅkāras (figures of sound and sense); the utterance is the ornament.
guṇālaṅkāra-bahulaṁ bhāṣaṇaṁ bhūṣaṇaṁ [iti] smṛtam
A stage-speech that comes loaded with poetic excellences (guṇa) and figures of speech (alaṅkāra) is what the tradition hands down as bhūṣaṇa, 'the ornament.'
Defines bhūṣaṇa, a sandhy-aṅga of the bhūṣaṇam subsection: not a physical jewel but speech that is itself an ornament, dense with guṇas and alaṅkāras.
