This verse takes a play to be a living body (śarīra). Its limbs have already been treated. The major limbs — the aṅgas — and the subordinate limbs — the upāṅgas — have knit that body of dramatic beauty (rūpaka-śrī) tightly together into one whole. That is where the verse starts, and from here it turns to how the body is to be adorned.
The kārikā runs across both lines as one sentence: suśliṣṭam here agrees with śarīram in L2. The controlling image is the play as a śarīra — the limbs (aṅga, upāṅga) build the body; the ornaments (bhūṣaṇa) decorate it. This verse opens the vibhūṣaṇāni section, which will define the thirty-six bhūṣaṇas — the classical thirty-six 'ornaments' of Sanskrit drama, going back to Bharata's Nāṭyaśāstra.
