The verse — decoded
L1example
aciraṁ nirasya rasitaiḥ pratipakṣaṁ rājahaṁsa-nikurambam |
aciraṁquickly, without delay adverb governing the gerundशीघ्र ही, बिना देर किए
nirasyaonce you have driven [them] off gerund of ni-√as; leads into the imperative siñca in L2दूर हटाकर, खदेड़कर (आगे L2 की 'सींच दे' आज्ञा से जुड़ता है)
rasitaiḥwith your thunder-rolls instrumental of means; rasita = a rain-cloud's roarअपनी गर्जनाओं के द्वारा (रसित = मेघ की गड़गड़ाहट)
rājahaṁsa-nikurambamnamely, the flock of royal swans in apposition to pratipakṣaṁ; swans quit the sky when the rains set in, so the cloud routs themजो राजहंसों का समूह ही है (विपक्ष का ही विशेषण) — वर्षा आने पर हंस आकाश छोड़ देते हैं, इसलिए मेघ उन्हें परास्त कर देता है
rasitaiḥ — with your thunder-rolls; aciraṁ — quickly; pratipakṣaṁ rājahaṁsa-nikurambam — the rival flock of royal swans; nirasya — once you have driven [them] off
O dark cloud, first roar and drive the enemy swans out of the sky — quickly, at once. (Swans flee the coming of the rains, so the cloud is their natural rout.) In the letter's code the swans are the rivals who stand between the lovers; the thunder is Kṛṣṇa's own overpowering presence.
An udāharaṇa of the lekha, 'the letter,' one of the thirty-six ornaments (bhūṣaṇa); kārikā 146 defines it as a patrikā (dispatch) 'filled with the intended meaning' (vivakṣita-artha). Quoted from the fifth act, where Paurṇamāsī reads out this letter — the next unit (146q2) names it 'Candrāvalī's letter' — source 5.7. The whole verse is one sustained cloud-metaphor, the veiled 'intended meaning' that makes it a lekha.
L2example
kṛṣṇa-ghanas tvām amṛtais tṛṣitāṁ candrakavatīṁ siñca
kṛṣṇa-ghanaḥO dark rain-cloud — that is, you, Kṛṣṇa nominative used for the vocative; śleṣa on kṛṣṇa = 'black' and the name Kṛṣṇa, ghana = 'cloud'हे कृष्णमेघ!
amṛtaiḥwith your nectar-waters instrumental of means; a cloud's rain is called amṛta, 'the deathless drink'अमृततुल्य जल के द्वारा (मेघ की वृष्टि को अमृत कहा जाता है)
tṛṣitāṁher who is parched with thirst agreeing with tvām, the object of siñcaप्यासी (तुझ = कर्म का विशेषण)
candrakavatīṁthe peahen — she of the peacock's moon-eyes candraka = the eye-spot in a peacock's tail; candrakavatī = the peahen, who longs for the rain-cloud; the candra- echo veils the writer's own name, Candrāvalīमयूरी को (चन्द्रक = मोरपंख की आँख, चन्द्रकवती = मोरनी, जो मेघ के लिए तरसती है; 'चन्द्र-' ध्वनि लेखिका के अपने नाम चन्द्रावली को छिपाए रखती है)
siñcasprinkle, shower [her] 2nd-sg. imperative addressed to the cloudसींच दे (मेघ के प्रति मध्यमपुरुष एकवचन की आज्ञा)
kṛṣṇa-ghanaḥ — O dark Kṛṣṇa-cloud; amṛtaiḥ — with your nectar-waters; tṛṣitāṁ candrakavatīṁ tvām — you, the thirsting peahen; siñca — sprinkle her
Now the plea: O Kṛṣṇa-cloud, shower this parched peahen — you — with your nectar-rain. The peahen, who cries for the monsoon cloud, is the thirsting lover; the nectar-rain is Kṛṣṇa's love. And 'candraka-vatī,' she of the moon-marks, quietly carries the name of the letter's author, Candrāvalī. That concealed self-naming inside the cloud-imagery is exactly the 'intended meaning' a lekha is built to carry.
The single sentence of the verse completes here: driving off the swans (L1) is the condition, sprinkling the peahen (L2) the request. The peahen–cloud conceit personifies Candrāvalī begging Kṛṣṇa for his love, all of it wrapped in figure — the coded love-message that makes the passage an instance of the lekha ornament.
(he) kṛṣṇa-ghanaḥ, rasitaiḥ pratipakṣaṁ rājahaṁsa-nikurambam aciraṁ nirasya, tṛṣitāṁ candrakavatīṁ tvām amṛtaiḥ siñca
O dark Kṛṣṇa-cloud — quickly, with your rolling thunder, drive off the enemy, that flock of royal swans, and then with your nectar-waters shower this thirsting peahen, you of the peacock's moon-eyes.
