Now svapna, 'dream,' is defined. When a character on stage, deep in sleep, mutters a few words, that sleep-utterance is what the authorities call svapna. So the term does not mean the dream itself but the bit of speech let slip during sleep.
निद्रा के बीच में पात्र जो कुछ थोड़ा-सा बड़बड़ा उठता है, उस वचन को ही विद्वान् लोग 'स्वप्न' कहते हैं। यहाँ 'स्वप्न' नींद में देखे जाने वाले सपने का नाम नहीं है, बल्कि सोते हुए पात्र के मुँह से निकले उन थोड़े-से बोलों का नाम है।
svapna: ordinarily 'a dream' or 'sleep.' As a dramaturgical term here it names the stage-device of a character half-speaking a few words while asleep — the sleep-utterance itself, not the dream-vision.
स्वप्न शब्द का साधारण अर्थ 'सपना' या 'नींद' होता है। परन्तु यहाँ नाट्य की परिभाषा में यह उस रंगमंचीय युक्ति का नाम है, जिसमें कोई पात्र सोते हुए ही कुछ शब्द आधे-अधूरे बोल उठता है — अर्थात् नींद में बोला गया वचन ही 'स्वप्न' है, न कि नींद में दीखने वाला दृश्य।

nidrā-antare (निद्रा के बीच में, जब पात्र सो रहा हो) yat kiñcit (जो कुछ थोड़ा-सा) jalpitaṁ (बड़बड़ाया हुआ वचन मुँह से निकलता है), (तम् एव) svapnaḥ (इति) paricakṣate (उसी को विद्वान् लोग 'स्वप्न' कहते हैं)।
When a character, sunk in sleep upon the stage, mutters a few words, that sleep-utterance is what the authorities call svapna, the 'dream': the term names not the vision seen in sleep but the bit of speech let slip while sleeping.
