viparyaya-jñānamis the cognition of a thing as its opposite — taking one thing to be anotherविपरीत ज्ञान है — अर्थात् वस्तु को जो वह नहीं है, वैसा जान लेना

niścayātbecause the mind settles it as certain — a firm conviction breeds the error ablative of cause — the firm decision is what produces the misapprehensionनिश्चय के कारण — दृढ़ निश्चय ही इस विपरीत ज्ञान को उत्पन्न करता है
bhrāntiḥ — bhrānti; viparyaya-jñānam — is the cognition of a thing as its opposite; prasaṅgasya api — even about a mere incidental occasion; niścayāt — because the mind settles it as a firm certainty.
Now bhrānti is defined. bhrānti is viparyaya-jñāna — mistaken cognition, taking one thing for another, the way a rope is taken for a snake. What triggers it? A firm conviction fastened onto even a mere incidental occasion. The point of 'even' (api) is that the occasion need not be solid grounds; a slight, passing pretext is enough. Once the mind clamps onto it as certain, the misapprehension follows. So the device is: a slender cue, seized as certain, breeding a settled but false belief.
viparyaya is a Nyāya term for false cognition — apprehending a thing as what it is not, the stock example being the rope mistaken for a snake. Here it names bhrānti as a dramatic device: a character's firm but wrong apprehension. 'prasaṅga' is an incidental circumstance or passing occasion; the force of 'api' is that even such a slight cue, once grasped with certainty (niścaya), is what generates the error.
prasaṅgasya api niścayāt [yat] viparyaya-jñānam [tat] bhrāntiḥ
bhrānti is a mistaken cognition — taking a thing for what it is not, as a rope for a snake — that arises when the mind fastens even onto a mere incidental occasion and settles it as certain; that firm conviction over so slight a cue is what breeds the error.
Defines the dramatic device bhrānti (the subsection bhrāntiḥ): its lakṣaṇa is viparyaya-jñāna produced by a firm conviction seized upon even a slender pretext.
