saṁvṛtti is when a speaker conceals what he himself has just said. The very person who spoke the words then covers them over, so their first meaning is hidden. It is a sandhy-aṅga — one of the limbs that make up the junctures of a play.
saṁvṛtti is one of the sixty-four sandhy-aṅgas, the 'limbs of the junctures' of classical Sanskrit dramaturgy. As this limb it names the beat where a character screens or takes back his own utterance. The verse is a received definition Rūpa adopts (origin 'quoted'); the illustration from act nine and its explanation follow in the next two units.
