phullaty ārān nava-vicakile keli-kuñjeṣu phullā
phullatiwhen it is in bloom — 'as it blossoms' loc. sg. present participle of √phull; with nava-vicakile it forms a locative-absolute clause, not a finite verbजब खिल उठता है (√फुल् का सप्तमी कृदन्त — नव-विचकिल के साथ सति-सप्तमी बनाता है, समापिका क्रिया नहीं)
ārātclose by, near at handपास ही / निकट
nava-vicakilethe fresh vicakila-jasmine — so 'as the fresh vicakila bursts into bloom nearby' loc. sg., the flower whose blooming is the occasion; vicakila = a variety of jasmineनया विचकिल-पुष्प (चमेली की एक जाति) — जिसके खिलने पर यह सब हो रहा है
keli-kuñjeṣuthere in the pleasure-bowersक्रीड़ा-कुंजों में
phullāshe too came into full bloom — the girl opened up, beaming like a flower fem. nom., predicated of bālā (L2); deliberately echoes the flower's phullatiवह (बाला) भी प्रफुल्ल हो उठी — फूल के 'फुल्लति' का ही प्रतिध्वनि
phullati nava-vicakile — as the fresh vicakila-jasmine blooms; ārāt — close by; keli-kuñjeṣu — in the pleasure-bowers; phullā [bālā] — the girl too blossomed, opening like a flower.
Watch how the girl's every movement copies the garden. As the fresh vicakila-jasmine bursts into bloom close by in the pleasure-bowers, the girl herself blossoms — she opens up, beaming, like an unfolding flower. The Sanskrit shares the very root: the jasmine 'phullati', the girl is 'phullā'. This is the first of three matched pairs.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of krodha, 'anger' — 'a blazing-up of the mind at the sight of an offense and the like' — the mood just defined in kārikā 138 (nc.7.16: krodhas tu manaso dīptir aparādhādi-darśanāt). It is an offstage voice (nepathye) speaking in the second act of a play. Across the three garden-lines each flower's action is matched to the girl's echoing state by a shared verb-root (phull-, skhal-, mīl-) — a sustained correspondence-figure that builds up to the sharp rebuke of the fourth line, where the anger itself surfaces.

śephālīnāṁ skhalati kusume hanta caskhāla bālā |
śephālīnāmof the śephālī-shrubs (night-jasmine) gen. pl.; śephālī = night-jasmine, whose blossoms drop of themselves at dawnशेफाली-पुष्पों के (षष्ठी बहुवचन; शेफाली = रात्रि की चमेली, जिसके फूल भोर में स्वयं झर जाते हैं)
skhalatiwhen it slips and falls — 'as the blossom drops' loc. sg. present participle of √skhal; with kusume, a second locative-absolute clauseजब झर पड़ता है (√स्खल् का सप्तमी कृदन्त — कुसुमे के साथ दूसरी सति-सप्तमी)
kusumethe blossom [of those śephālīs] loc. sg.
hantaah! — a catch of feelingहाय!
caskhālastumbled, lost her footing perfect of √skhal — the same root as the flower's skhalatiवह लड़खड़ा गयी / फिसल पड़ी — फूल के 'स्खलति' की ही प्रतिध्वनि (एक ही धातु √स्खल्)
bālāthe young girl — the subject who answers each garden-eventवह बाला
śephālīnām kusume skhalati — as the blossom of the śephālī-shrubs slips and falls; hanta — ah!; bālā caskhāla — the young girl stumbled.
The second pair. As a night-jasmine blossom slips from its stalk and drops — ah! — the young girl too stumbles and loses her footing. Once again the root is shared: the flower 'skhalati', the girl 'caskhāla'. Whatever the garden does, her body answers on the instant.

mīlaty uccaiḥ kuvalaya-vane mīlitākṣī kilāsīt
mīlatiwhen it closes up — 'as the grove shuts' loc. sg. present participle of √mīl (to close, shut); with kuvalaya-vane, the third locative-absolute clauseजब मुँद जाता है / बन्द हो जाता है (√मील् का सप्तमी कृदन्त — कुवलय-वने के साथ तीसरी सति-सप्तमी)
uccaiḥright up, thoroughly adv.; here the fullness of the closingपूरी तरह / अत्यन्त — यहाँ मुँदने की पूर्णता
kuvalaya-vanethe grove of blue water-lilies (kuvalaya) loc. sg.; the blue lily folds shut at duskकुवलय-वन (नील-कमलों के वन) में — नील कमल सन्ध्या में मुँद जाता है
mīlitākṣīher own eyes fallen shut — 'the closed-eyed one' fem. nom., echoing the grove's mīlatiमुँदी हुई आँखोंवाली — वन के 'मीलति' की ही प्रतिध्वनि
kilaso they say — a reported 'indeed'निश्चय ही
āsītshe became imperfect of √asवह हो गयी (√अस् का लङ्)
uccaiḥ mīlati kuvalaya-vane — as the blue-lily grove closes right up; mīlitākṣī āsīt kila — she too, so they say, became closed-eyed.
The third pair, and the tightest. As the blue-lily grove folds right up at dusk, she too — so the report goes — lets her eyes fall shut. The grove 'mīlati', the girl is 'mīlitākṣī'. Three times over, flower and girl move by the very same verb: phull-, skhal-, mīl-.

vācyaṁ kiṁ vā param upahasīr mā praṇāma-cchalena
vācyaṁ kiṁ vā paramor what more is there even to say? param = further, more; a rhetorical throwing-up of the handsऔर अधिक क्या कहा जाये?
upahasīḥ mādo not go on mocking (me) mā + aorist injunctive of upa-√has — a sharp prohibitionमत उपहास करो / मेरी हँसी मत उड़ाओ (मा + उप-√हस् का आगमरहित लुङ् — तीखा निषेध)
praṇāma-cchalenaunder the pretext of a bow — hiding the jibe behind a show of respect instr. of means; chala = trick, pretenseप्रणाम के बहाने से (करण तृतीया; छल = बहाना, ढोंग)
param vācyaṁ kiṁ vā — or what more need be said?; praṇāma-cchalena mā upahasīḥ — do not mock me under the pretext of a bow.
Now the anger breaks out. 'What more is there even to say? — only, do not go on mocking me under cover of a bow.' The pretended praṇāma, the show of paying respects, merely masks a jibe, and the speaker will not have it. This closing rebuke is what makes the whole verse an example of krodha — the mind flaring up at a slight it has just caught sight of.
