Now dāna. The wise declare that dāna is priya-vastu-samarpaṇa — the handing over of a thing that is dear or precious. So among the junction-limbs, dāna is the moment a character makes a gift of something cherished.
अब दान का लक्षण। धीर विद्वानों ने दान इसे कहा है — किसी प्रिय अर्थात् मूल्यवान् वस्तु को सौंप देना। यहाँ दान का अर्थ सामान्य दानधर्म नहीं, अपितु रंगमंच का यह अंग है — पात्र का किसी बहुमूल्य वस्तु को प्रत्यक्ष अर्पण करना।
dāna is one of the twenty-one sandhy-antaras (the extra junction-limbs listed in 7.2-3), coming next after sāma, defined in 7.4. Here 'dāna' is not almsgiving in general but the dramaturgical limb: onstage, the presenting of a valued object.
दान इक्कीस सन्ध्यन्तरों में से एक है — ये अतिरिक्त सन्धि-अंग ७.२-३ में गिनाए गए हैं। साम के अनन्तर इसका क्रम आता है, जिसका लक्षण ७.४ में कहा गया। यहाँ दान सामान्य दानधर्म नहीं, अपितु नाट्य का अंग है — रंगमंच पर किसी मूल्यवान् वस्तु को प्रत्यक्ष अर्पित करना।
