bhavet sāma priyaṁ vākyaṁ svānuvṛtti-prakāśanam ||
bhavetis said to be — the copula that carries the definition optative 3rd sg., used in the standard defining sense: 'X is [defined as]…'
sāmasāma (conciliation) — the sandhy-antara now being defined nominative, the word being defined; kept in IAST as a technical term (the first of the 21 sandhy-antaras enumerated at v002)साम — जिसका यहाँ लक्षण किया जा रहा है; इक्कीस सन्ध्यन्तरों में प्रथम
svānuvṛtti-prakāśanamwhich makes plain one's own accord — that the speaker is falling in with, deferring to, the other nominative, a second predicate qualifying priyaṁ vākyaṁ: sva 'one's own' + anuvṛtti 'going-along-with, compliance, deference' + prakāśana 'showing, revealing'और अपनी अनुवृत्ति को प्रकट करनेवाला — अर्थात् दूसरे के प्रति अपने अनुकूल आचरण को दर्शानेवाला वचन
sāma bhavet — sāma is; priyaṁ vākyaṁ — agreeable speech; svānuvṛtti-prakāśanam — that reveals one's own accord (that one is going along with the other).
sāma, conciliation, is defined in one line. It is priya vākya — pleasing, welcome speech. And that speech does a particular thing: svānuvṛtti-prakāśana, it makes plain that the speaker is falling in with the other person, deferring to their wishes. So sāma is not just kind words; it is kind words that show you are on the other's side. This is the first of the twenty-one sandhy-antaras listed just before.
sāma is the first of the four classical upāyas (sāma, dāna, bheda, daṇḍa — conciliation, gift, sowing-dissension, force), here pressed into service as a dramaturgical sandhy-antara, a plot-move used within the junctures to keep the aṅgas from slackening (see the lead-in at v001). Rūpa gives only the lakṣaṇa; the term svānuvṛtti admits two shadings — the speaker's own show of deference to the other, or the making-visible of the other's coming-into-accord with the speaker — and the line does not settle between them. anuvṛtti here is the technical 'compliant following-along', not mere continuation.
priyaṁ svānuvṛtti-prakāśanam vākyaṁ sāma bhavet.
Agreeable, welcome speech that makes plain one's own falling-in with the other — that is what is called sāma, conciliation.
Definition (lakṣaṇa) of sāma, the first of the twenty-one sandhy-antaras: pleasing speech that shows the speaker deferring to the other.
