L1definition
mukha-sandhy-ādayo yatra vikīrṇā bīja-saṁyutāḥ |
mukha-sandhy-ādayaḥthe mukha-sandhi and the rest — the opening juncture and the other earlier junctures that ran before this one nominative plural, the subject; bahuvrīhi/dvandva with -ādi, 'the mukha-sandhi etc.', i.e. all the preceding sandhisमुख-सन्धि आदि (सभी पूर्ववर्ती सन्धियाँ) — यही वाक्य के कर्ता हैं
yatrain which — points ahead to the juncture being defined (answered by tat in L2) relative adverb of place/locus, correlative to tatजिस (सन्धि) में — 'तत्' का सम्बन्धी अधिकरणवाचक
vikīrṇāḥlying scattered — spread out and dispersed across the course of the play nominative plural, predicate agreeing with mukha-sandhy-ādayaḥबिखरी हुई (इधर-उधर फैली हुई कथा-धाराएँ)
bīja-saṁyutāḥgathered back together with the bīja — reconnected to the original seed of the plot nominative plural bahuvrīhi, 'joined-with-the-seed'; bīja is the plot's germ, sown early and now rejoinedबीज के साथ फिर से जुड़ी हुई — जो बीज आरम्भ में बोया गया था, उससे मिली हुई
yatra — in which; mukha-sandhy-ādayaḥ — the mukha-sandhi and the earlier junctures; vikīrṇāḥ — lying scattered; bīja-saṁyutāḥ — gathered back together with the plot-seed; (…continues in L2: yānti — reach — the great purpose).
Rūpa is defining the last of the five junctures. He starts by describing the scene at the end of a play. All the earlier junctures — the mukha-sandhi and the rest — have by now spread their threads out across the whole drama; they lie scattered. But at this closing point they are drawn back together and rejoined to the bīja, the original seed of the plot that was planted at the very start. The sentence is not finished yet — L2 tells us what these regathered strands do.
The five sandhis (junctures) of a nāṭaka are mukha, pratimukha, garbha, vimarśa, and nirvahaṇa; this kārikā defines the fifth. The bīja ('seed') is a technical term of nāṭya-śāstra — the germ of the plot, one of the arthaprakṛtis, sown at the opening and brought to fruit at the close.
L2definition
mahat-prayojanaṁ yānti tan nirvahaṇam ucyate ||
mahat-prayojanaṁthe great purpose — the grand final aim the whole play was undertaken to reach accusative singular, object of yānti; mahat + prayojana, the culminating fruit (phala) of the dramaमहान् प्रयोजन को (नाटक का चरम फल) — यह 'yānti' का कर्म है
yāntithey reach, they arrive at — the regathered junctures now attain it 3rd person plural present; subject carried over from L1, mukha-sandhy-ādayaḥपहुँच जाती हैं — कर्ता पूर्व पंक्ति की मुख-सन्धि आदि सन्धियाँ ही हैं
tatthat — the juncture in which all this happens (answers yatra of L1) nominative singular neuter, correlative to yatra; subject of ucyateवह (सन्धि) — 'yatra' का सम्बन्धी, 'ucyate' का कर्ता
nirvahaṇamis nirvahaṇa — the concluding juncture, the winding-up that ties off the plot predicate nominative, the term being namedनिर्वहण — जिस नाम से इसे पुकारा जाता है, वह विधेय पद
ucyateis called, is declared to beकहा जाता है
mahat-prayojanaṁ — the great purpose; yānti — they reach; tat — that; nirvahaṇam — as nirvahaṇa; ucyate — is called.
Now the sentence closes. Those earlier junctures, once scattered and now rejoined to the plot-seed, reach the mahat-prayojana — the great final purpose, the goal the entire play was built toward. The juncture in which that happens is what is called nirvahaṇa, the concluding juncture. So the name marks the moment where everything the drama set in motion is brought home and the main aim is finally won.
nirvahaṇa (also called the kārya or dénouement) is the fifth and last sandhi; its mark is that all the previously dispersed plot-strands, reunited with the bīja, at last attain the phala — the play's grand purpose.
yatra mukha-sandhy-ādayaḥ vikīrṇāḥ (santaḥ) bīja-saṁyutāḥ (bhūtvā) mahat-prayojanaṁ yānti, tat nirvahaṇam ucyate.
That juncture in which the mukha-sandhi and the other earlier junctures — which by now lie scattered, their threads spread out across the whole play — are drawn back together, rejoined to the bīja, the original seed of the plot sown at the opening, and so at last reach the mahat-prayojana, the great final purpose the whole drama was built toward: that is what is called the nirvahaṇa, the concluding juncture.
The defining kārikā (lakṣaṇa) of the fifth and last sandhi, nirvahaṇa — the winding-up in which every dispersed plot-strand is reunited with the bīja and the play's grand aim (phala) is finally won.
