L1definition
manaś-ceṣṭā-samutpannaḥ śramaḥ kheda itīryate ||
manaś-ceṣṭā-samutpannaḥarising from mental strain and bodily exertion — born of both the mind's working and the body's effort tatpuruṣa qualifying śramaḥ: manaḥ ('mind') + ceṣṭā ('exertion, activity') as a dvandva, + samutpanna ('arisen from'); the ablative sense 'from' is folded inमन और उसकी चेष्टा — इन दोनों से उत्पन्न (क्योंकि यह मानसिक श्रम से जन्म लेता है)
śramaḥis the fatigue, the worn-out tiredness — the genus into which the definition places kheda nominative singular, the predicate noun equated with khedaवह श्रम अर्थात् थकान (जिसे यहाँ खेद के समान बताया जा रहा है)
khedakheda — weariness, the sandhy-aṅga being defined here nominative singular (kheda before iti drops its visarga in sandhi), the term defined'खेद' — यही उस श्रम का नाम है (सन्धि का एक अंग)
itias 'kheda' — the quotative marker naming what this fatigue is called iti quoting the name; with īryate = 'is called "kheda"'इस प्रकार — इसी नाम को उद्धृत करते हुए
īryateis so declared, is what it is called — the passive of a standing definition passive of √īr ('to declare, name'); the defining 'is said to be'कहा जाता है, ऐसा नाम दिया जाता है
manaś-ceṣṭā-samutpannaḥ — arising from mental strain and bodily exertion; śramaḥ — the fatigue; kheda iti — as 'kheda'; īryate — is declared to be.
Here Rūpa gives the lakṣaṇa of kheda, one of the sandhy-aṅgas, the named limbs of a dramatic juncture. Its genus is śrama — fatigue, tiredness. But not every kind of fatigue: what makes it kheda is where it comes from. It is manaś-ceṣṭā-samutpanna — the tiredness that arises from the mind's strain together with the body's exertion. So when a character is worn out both in mind and in action, that weariness is what is called kheda.
kheda ('weariness') here is a technical sandhy-aṅga, one of the named limbs of a sandhi (dramatic juncture), not the everyday emotion of grief; the illustration follows in the next unit (yathā tatraiva saptame). The lead-in flags a variant in the transmission: where this text reads vidrava, vivalana, chalana among the aṅgas, some authorities instead read and define kheda, pratiṣedha, and chādana.
manaś-ceṣṭā-samutpannaḥ śramaḥ kheda iti īryate
The fatigue that springs up from the mind's strain together with the body's exertion is what is called kheda.
Rūpa's lakṣaṇa of kheda, a sandhy-aṅga: its genus is śrama (fatigue), differentiated as fatigue born of mental and bodily effort.
