L1definition
ādānaṁ kārya-saṅgrahaḥ ||
ādānaṁādāna — 'taking up, seizing', the sandhy-aṅga (limb of a dramatic juncture) being defined here nominative neuter — the term defined, equated with the predicate kārya-saṅgrahaḥ'आदान' नामक जो अंग है (यही वह पद है जिसका लक्षण यहाँ कहा जा रहा है)
kārya-saṅgrahaḥis the taking-hold of the goal — the gathering-up, the securing, of the aim the plot is driving toward predicate nominative equated with ādānaṁ; tatpuruṣa compound kārya ('the goal, the business to be accomplished') + saṅgraha ('collecting, taking firm hold of')वह कार्य का संग्रह है — अर्थात् नाटक के साध्य प्रयोजन (कार्य) को दृढ़ता से पकड़कर उसकी सिद्धि की ओर बटोर लेना
ādānaṁ — ādāna; kārya-saṅgrahaḥ — is the taking-hold of the goal.
Here Rūpa gives the lakṣaṇa of the sandhy-aṅga called ādāna, literally 'taking up' or 'seizing'. It is kārya-saṅgraha — the gathering-up of the kārya, the goal the action has been driving toward. This is the limb where the accomplishment of that aim is finally taken firmly in hand and secured. When the play reaches the point at which the pursuit of its goal is grasped and drawn together toward its fruit, that limb of the juncture is ādāna.
ādāna is one of the classical sandhy-aṅgas (limbs of a dramatic juncture) inherited from the nāṭya-śāstra tradition; it belongs with the group of the avamarśa (vimarśa) juncture — alongside virodhana, prarocanā, and vivalana just defined — and names the point where the play's goal (kārya) is taken up and gathered toward its accomplishment. Rūpa states its lakṣaṇa here so a Vaiṣṇava play can be read for it. (The verse quoted in the lead-in, 8.34, illustrates the preceding aṅga vivalana, not ādāna.)
ādānaṁ kārya-saṅgrahaḥ [asti]
ādāna is the taking-hold of the goal (kārya-saṅgraha) — the point at which the aim the plot has been driving toward is finally grasped and gathered up toward its accomplishment.
A lakṣaṇa-kārikā: Rūpa defines the sandhy-aṅga ādāna ('taking up') as kārya-saṅgraha, the securing of the play's goal — one of the limbs of the avamarśa juncture, following the just-defined vivalana (which the quoted verse 8.34 in the lead-in illustrates).
