... vacaḥ saṁrambhi toṭakam ||
vacaḥan utterance, the words a character speaksवचन, वाणी — जो कथन कहा जा रहा है
saṁrambhiwhen they come out charged with saṁrambha — heated, vehement, spoken in a burst of anger or agitation possessive -in adjective agreeing with vacaḥ: 'speech that has saṁrambha in it'; saṁrambha is the flare of angry excitement, not calm speechजिसमें संरम्भ (क्रोधजनित आवेश, उत्तेजना) भरा हो — ऐसा उत्तेजित वचन, शान्त नहीं
saṁrambhi vacaḥ — vehement, agitated speech; toṭakam — is [called] toṭaka.
Toṭaka is agitated speech. When a character breaks out in vehement, angry words — swept up in saṁrambha, a rush of heat and fury — that heated utterance is the limb called toṭaka. Only the tail of Rūpa's defining line survives here; its opening words, which finished off the previous limb, are dropped (the '...').
toṭaka is one of the sandhy-aṅgas — the component limbs of a juncture — and in the standard lists a limb of the garbha-sandhi. In Rūpa's running sequence it follows saṅgraha and anumāna (vv 86, 86q2) and precedes adhibala, 'deception through fraud' (v 88). Its defining mark is saṁrambha (agitation), as the next unit's remark confirms: 'atra saṁrambhena toṭakaṁ prakaṭam eva' — 'here toṭaka shows itself precisely through the agitation.' The illustration that follows (Nārada's blazing rebuke of Kaṁsa, v 87q1) carries this vehement register.
saṁrambhi vacaḥ toṭakam [ucyate].
Speech that comes out charged with saṁrambha — words spoken in a burst of heat and fury — is the limb called toṭaka. (Only the closing words of Rūpa's defining line survive here; its opening, which had rounded off the previous limb, is dropped at the '...'.)
Rūpa's defining kārikā (lakṣaṇa) for the sandhy-aṅga toṭaka, marking it out as vehement, agitated speech (saṁrambha).
