Here Rūpa defines the sandhy-aṅga called saṅgraha, 'winning-over'. It is the bringing-together of three gentle means: sāma (kind, conciliating words), dāna (giving a gift), and artha (offering wealth or material means). When these are applied together to draw someone over, that is saṅgraha.
sāma, dāna and artha are three of the classical upāyas (means of policy) taken over from statecraft (rāja-nīti) — where the full set is sāma, dāna, bheda and daṇḍa — into dramaturgy: here they name the gentle, drawing-together methods a character uses to win another's favor.
sāma-dāna-artha-saṁyogaḥ saṅgrahaḥ (iti) parikīrtitaḥ.
The joint application of sāma (winning someone over with gentle, conciliating words), dāna (winning by giving a gift), and artha (winning by offering wealth or material means) — the bringing-together of these three drawing-in methods — is what the authorities declare to be the sandhy-aṅga called saṅgraha, 'winning-over'.
A lakṣaṇa-kārikā: Rūpa defines the sandhy-aṅga saṅgraha as the combined use of the three gentle upāyas — sāma, dāna, and artha.
