L1definition
uttarottara-vākyaṁ tu bhavet pragamanaṁ punaḥ ||
uttarottara-vākyaṁspeech that runs answer-upon-answer — each rejoinder capping the one before, the talk moving forward turn by turn subject, nom. neuter; uttara-uttara 'reply after reply, one on top of the next' + vākya 'speech, utterance' — the give-and-take of reparteeउत्तरोत्तर वाक्य — एक के बाद एक, उत्तर पर उत्तर चढ़ता हुआ वचन; अर्थात् बात-पर-बात की वह लड़ी जो संवाद को आगे बढ़ाती है (कर्ता, नपुंसक प्रथमा)
tuand this one, for its part — turning from narma-dyuti just defined to the next itemऔर अब — पूर्व अंगों (नर्म, नर्मद्युति) के पश्चात् इस अगले अंग को जोड़ता हुआ शब्द
bhavetcounts as, is reckoned to be optative, 3rd sg. of bhū — the definitional 'would be', the standard lakṣaṇa formulaहोता है — 'यह इस प्रकार का होता है' ऐसी लक्षण बताने वाली विधिलिङ् क्रिया
pragamanaṁpragamana — the name given to that kind of speech predicate nom. neuter; pragamana literally 'a going forward, an advancing' — the dialogue that pushes aheadप्रगमन (नाम) — 'आगे बढ़ना'; वह अंग जो दृश्य को आगे धकेलता है (विधेय, नपुंसक प्रथमा)
punaḥhere again, as a further entry — marking one more limb added to the listफिर — गणना में अगला अंग गिनाते हुए 'और आगे' के भाव में
uttarottara-vākyaṁ tu — but the speech that runs reply upon reply; punaḥ bhavet pragamanaṁ — that, in its turn, counts as pragamana.
Now for the next limb. Take a stretch of dialogue that goes answer-upon-answer — one speaker replies, the other tops it, and the exchange keeps advancing turn by turn. That kind of forward-moving repartee is what is called pragamana. So pragamana is, in short: dialogue that carries itself onward through successive rejoinders.
pragamana is a technical nāṭya term — a limb (aṅga) of dramatic dialogue, named from pra-gam 'to go forward'. It is defined by its shape rather than its content: not a single speech but an unbroken chain of speech-and-counter-speech that keeps the scene moving. The tu and punaḥ mark it as the next item in Rūpa's running list, added just after narma and narma-dyuti (6.37-38). This is a svarūpa-lakṣaṇa — it names what pragamana essentially is (successive-reply speech), not merely a sign to spot it by. The kārikā is quoted (origin: quoted, ref 3.12) rather than composed by Rūpa himself.
uttarottara-vākyaṁ tu punaḥ pragamanaṁ bhavet.
uttarottara-vākyaṁ tu punaḥ pragamanaṁ bhavet
A stretch of dialogue that runs answer upon answer — one speaker replies, the other caps it, and the exchange keeps advancing turn by turn — this, in its turn, is what counts as pragamana.
Defines pragamana, the 'advancing' aṅga of dramatic dialogue — a svarūpa-lakṣaṇa naming it as forward-moving, reply-upon-reply repartee — added next in Rūpa's running list after narma and narma-dyuti (quoted kārikā, ref 3.12).
