vidhutaṁ — vidhuta; abhīṣṭārthānavāptitaḥ — because the desired goal is not attained; duḥkham — [is] the distress; kathitaṁ — so it is declared.
Vidhuta is declared to be distress. It is the sorrow that rises when a longed-for goal is not reached. The desired object slips out of reach, grief follows, and that grief is the sandhy-aṅga called vidhuta.
vidhuta is a sandhy-aṅga, one of the limbs of the dramatic junctures; this kārikā gives its lakṣaṇa (defining mark). The subsection heading vidhutam names the term.

Or else, on a second reading, vidhuta is the rejection of conciliation and the like. When the coaxing and propitiation offered to someone is rebuffed, that turning-away is called vidhuta. Rūpa lets both definitions stand side by side.
athavā offers a second lakṣaṇa of vidhuta — spurning the overtures of appeasement — held alongside the first (distress at an unmet goal), not chosen over it.

Vidhuta is declared to be the distress that arises when a longed-for object is not attained. Or else, on a second reading, vidhuta would be the rejection of conciliation and the like — the spurning of the coaxing and appeasement offered to one who is displeased. Rūpa lets both definitions of the sandhy-aṅga stand side by side.
A lakṣaṇa-kārikā defining the sandhy-aṅga vidhuta, giving two definitions held together by athavā (grief at an unmet goal; rejection of overtures of appeasement), neither chosen over the other.
