A bīja is the seed of the plot, dropped in early. Suppose it goes out of sight for a stretch of the play. When it is brought back to mind, that recall is what the tradition calls parisarpa — literally 'the creeping-back'. So the whole definition is: the recollection of a lost plot-seed is named parisarpa.
जो कथा-बीज नाटक के आरम्भ में बोया गया और बीच में लुप्त-सा हो गया था, उसका फिर से याद आ जाना ही परिसर्प है। इसी को आचार्यों ने परिसर्प नामक अंग माना है।
Both bīja and parisarpa are technical dramaturgy terms. bīja, the 'seed', is the germ of the plot sown at the very beginning, which unfolds as the action grows. parisarpa ('creeping about, moving back') is one of the aṅgas — the limbs of a sandhi, the joints of dramatic structure: the moment when a seed thought lost is retrieved and set moving again.
बीज और परिसर्प — दोनों नाट्य के पारिभाषिक शब्द हैं। बीज वह 'बीज' है जो नाटक के प्रारम्भ में ही बो दिया जाता है, और कथा के बढ़ने के साथ फूट-फूटकर प्रकट होता है। परिसर्प ('रेंगकर आगे बढ़ना, लौट आना') सन्धि के अंगों में से एक है — नाट्य-रचना की गाँठों में वह क्षण, जब खोया-सा समझा गया बीज फिर पकड़ में आता है और कथा को आगे चलाने लगता है।

naṣṭasya bījasya yā smṛtiḥ, saḥ parisarpaḥ iti smṛtaḥ — जो बीज नष्ट-सा हो गया था, उसकी जो पुनः स्मृति है, वही परिसर्प (नामक अंग) माना गया है।
When the bīja — the plot-seed sown at the outset and then let drop out of sight for a stretch — is brought back to mind, that recollection is what the tradition records under the name parisarpa, 'the creeping-back'.
