bhavet pratimukhaṁ dṛśyaṁ bīja-prakāśanam |
pratimukhaṁthe pratimukha-sandhi (the second of a play's five junctures) — this is the term being definedप्रतिमुख (नामक दूसरी सन्धि)
bīja-prakāśanamis the making-visible of the bīja, the 'seed' of the plot that was planted back in the opening (mukha) junctureकथा-बीज का प्रकाशन — अर्थात् बीज का प्रकट होना
dṛśyaṁone that can now be seen — the seed, hidden till now, becomes perceptible modifies bīja-prakāśanam; the contrast is with the seed's earlier hidden state in the mukha-sandhiजो दृश्य हो — अर्थात् दिखाई देने योग्य होकर (मुख-सन्धि में छिपे हुए बीज के विपरीत)
bhavetis so defined — 'let it be [called this]' optative of definition (vidhi-liṅ), the standard lakṣaṇa verbवही होती है (लक्षण की विधिलिङ्)
pratimukhaṁ — the pratimukha-sandhi; dṛśyaṁ bīja-prakāśanam — is the now-perceptible manifesting of the seed; bhavet — is [so defined].
The pratimukha is the second of the five junctures (sandhis) of a play. In it the bīja — the 'seed' of the plot, first sown in the opening mukha-sandhi — now shows itself. What was hidden becomes perceptible: the seed begins to be seen.
bīja ('seed') is the germ of the whole plot, dropped in almost unnoticed at the very start; from it the entire action grows, as a tree grows from a seed. In the opening mukha-sandhi the seed is merely planted. Here in the pratimukha it first becomes dṛśya, 'visible' — it surfaces enough to be caught sight of, though it will keep appearing and disappearing as the play runs on.

bindu-prayatnopagamād aṅgāny asya trayodaśa ||
bindu-prayatnopagamādbecause it comes about through the arrival of the bindu (the 'drop' that keeps the plot's stream flowing on from the seed) together with the prayatna (the stage of active effort toward the goal) ablative of cause; upagama = 'onset, coming-into-play' — the two elements whose joining constitutes this junctureक्योंकि इसमें बिन्दु और प्रयत्न का उपगम — अर्थात् इन दोनों तत्त्वों का आना और मिलना होता है

asya — of this pratimukha; bindu-prayatnopagamāt — because the bindu and the prayatna come into play; aṅgāni — its limbs; trayodaśa — are thirteen.
This juncture arises where two things arrive together: the bindu — the 'drop' that carries the plot's stream forward from the seed — and the prayatna, the stage of active effort toward the aim. The pratimukha-sandhi has thirteen limbs (sandhy-aṅgas), thirteen recognized sub-parts.
Each of the five junctures pairs one arthaprakṛti (a plot-element: bīja, bindu, patākā, prakarī, kārya) with one avasthā (a stage of the action: ārambha, prayatna, prāptyāśā, niyatāpti, phalāgama). The mukha-sandhi joined the bīja with ārambha; the pratimukha-sandhi, defined here, joins the bindu with the prayatna. That pairing is what makes this the second juncture, and thirteen aṅgas are assigned to it.

The pratimukha is that juncture (sandhi) in which the bīja — the 'seed' of the plot, first sown in the opening mukha-sandhi — now becomes perceptible and shows itself; and because in it the bindu (the 'drop' that carries the plot's stream forward from the seed) and the prayatna (the stage of active effort toward the goal) come into play together, its limbs (sandhy-aṅgas) are thirteen.

Rūpa's defining kārikā of the pratimukha-sandhi — the second of a play's five junctures — fixing both its nature (the bīja made visible) and its count of thirteen aṅgas.
