L1definition
sukha-duḥkha-karaṁ yat tu tad vidhānaṁ budhā viduḥ ||
sukha-duḥkha-karaṁthat which brings about both joy and sorrow at once — sukha delight, duḥkha distress, kara the producing of them accusative, the thing being defined; a tatpuruṣa on the dvandva sukha-duḥkha — 'making (kara) of joy-and-sorrow'जो सुख और दुःख — दोनों को उत्पन्न करता है (यही जिसका वर्णन किया जा रहा है)
yat tubut that which — tu marking the turn to a fresh limb, set off from samādhāna just defined relative pronoun opening the definition; tu is the shift-particle, not a real adversativeजो (सन्धि-अंग); यहाँ 'तु' केवल प्रसंग-परिवर्तन का सूचक है, कोई विरोध नहीं दिखाता
tadthat same thing correlative answering yat — 'whatever… that'वही — 'जो…
vidhānaṁis vidhāna, the 'arranging' predicate — the technical name assigned to the thing just described'विधान' — अभी जिसका लक्षण कहा गया, उसका पारिभाषिक नाम
budhāthe wise, those learned in dramaturgy budhāḥ, nominative plural, the subject of viduḥविद्वान् लोग (यह विदुः का कर्ता है)
viduḥknow it as, recognize it to beजानते हैं, ऐसा कहते हैं
yat tu sukha-duḥkha-karaṁ — but that which produces both joy and sorrow; tad vidhānaṁ — that is vidhāna; budhā viduḥ — the wise know it to be.
Now the next limb of the opening juncture is defined. That arrangement in the plot which brings about joy and sorrow together — the wise in dramaturgy call it vidhāna, the 'arranging'. Where samādhāna re-planted the seed of love, vidhāna is the turn where the play stirs up delight and distress at once.
vidhāna ordinarily means 'arranging, ordaining, a provision'; as a nāṭya term here it is a sandhy-aṅga — a limb of the mukha-sandhi (opening juncture) — namely the moment that produces a mixture of joy and sorrow. It follows samādhāna (defined in the previous kārikā, nc.6.12). The 'yathā tatraiva—' header and the Lalita-Mādhava 1.14 reference on this unit belong to the Prakrit Rādhā verse in the lead-in, which illustrates that preceding samādhāna, not this defining line.
yat tu sukha-duḥkha-karaṁ, tad vidhānaṁ [iti] budhā viduḥ.
But that turn in the plot which brings about joy and sorrow together — that the wise, learned in dramaturgy, know as vidhāna, the 'arranging'.
A lakṣaṇa (definition) kārikā naming the sandhy-aṅga vidhāna — the limb of the mukha-sandhi (opening juncture) that produces a mixture of joy and sorrow; it follows samādhāna (nc.6.12), whose Prakrit Rādhā illustration from Lalita-Mādhava 1.14 stands in this unit's lead-in.
