mukhya-prayojana-vaśāt kathāṅgānāṁ samanvaye |
mukhya-prayojana-vaśātdriven by the one main purpose — the single overriding aim the whole play serves ablative of cause: -vaśāt 'by force of'; it is this master-aim that pulls the parts togetherमुख्य प्रयोजन के बल से — क्योंकि नाटक का प्रधान लक्ष्य ही अंगों को एक साथ खींचता है
kathā-aṅgānāṁof the parts of the story — its component episodes and threads genitive plural: kathā 'story' + aṅga 'limb, part'; these are what get joinedकथा के अंगों का — जो जोड़े जाते हैं
samanvayewhen they are woven together into one connected whole locative of circumstance: 'in the case of their being fully joined up'; sets the condition for the definition in L2जब भली-भाँति परस्पर जुड़ जाते हैं, तब
mukhya-prayojana-vaśāt — driven by the one main purpose; kathā-aṅgānāṁ — of the parts of the story; samanvaye — when they are woven together into one connected whole …
A play has one overriding aim — the mukhya-prayojana, its main purpose. The story itself is told through many component parts (kathāṅga): its separate episodes and threads. This line sets the condition: when all those parts are drawn together into one connected whole, and it is that single master-aim that does the drawing. The predicate follows in the next line.
This kārikā is the general lakṣaṇa of sandhi, the 'juncture' of a play, and heads the section on the sandhy-aṅgāni (the sub-limbs of each sandhi). A play unfolds through five sandhis (mukha, pratimukha, garbha, vimarśa, nirvahaṇa), matching the five kāryāvasthās defined earlier (nc.5.13): as the one action passes from stage to stage, its parts must be jointed together, and each such joint is a sandhi. The definition tracks the standard dramaturgic one (cf. Daśarūpaka 1.22, avāntarārtha-sambandhaḥ sandhiḥ).
L2definition
avāntarārtha-sambandhaḥ sandhiḥ sandhāna-rūpakaḥ ||
avāntara-artha-sambandhaḥthe linking-up of a subordinate matter to that main aim nominative — the thing being defined; avāntara 'incidental, secondary' + artha 'aim, matter' + sambandha 'connection'अवान्तर अर्थ का सम्बन्ध — गौण या प्रासंगिक प्रयोजन का परस्पर जुड़ाव
sandhiḥis called a sandhi — a juncture of the play nominative: the technical term the whole verse definesसन्धि — यही वह पारिभाषिक शब्द है जिसकी परिभाषा दी जा रही है
sandhāna-rūpakaḥwhose very nature is joining nominative in apposition to sandhiḥ: sandhāna 'the act of joining' + rūpaka '-formed, consisting of'; names why it is called sandhiजोड़ने के रूप वाला — जिसका स्वरूप ही सन्धान (जोड़ना) है; इसी कारण उसे 'सन्धि' कहते हैं
… avāntara-artha-sambandhaḥ — the linking of a subordinate matter to the main aim; sandhāna-rūpakaḥ — whose very nature is joining; sandhiḥ — is (called) a sandhi, a juncture.
Now the predicate. Under that condition, the connection that binds each subordinate matter (avāntara-artha) to the one main purpose is what we call a sandhi, a 'juncture' of the play. The name says what it is: sandhi means 'joining' (sandhāna). A sandhi is by its very nature a joint — the seam where a secondary strand of the story is tied back into the single overriding aim. So each place where the parts are jointed toward the one goal is a sandhi.
mukhya-prayojana-vaśāt kathā-aṅgānāṁ samanvaye [sati], avāntara-artha-sambandhaḥ sandhāna-rūpakaḥ sandhiḥ [ucyate].
When the component parts of the story are drawn together into one connected whole by force of the play's single overriding aim (the mukhya-prayojana), then the very connection that ties each subordinate matter (avāntara-artha) back to that main aim is what is called a sandhi, a 'juncture' — so named because its nature is precisely joining (sandhāna).
The general lakṣaṇa of sandhi (the juncture of a play), opening the section on the sandhy-aṅgāni: it defines a sandhi as the joint that binds a secondary strand of the story to the one master-aim.
