nijābhīṣṭa-phalāvāptir bhaved eva phalāgamaḥ ||
nijābhīṣṭa-phalāvāptiḥthe winning of the very result one had set one's heart on nija = one's own; abhīṣṭa = longed-for; phala = fruit/result; avāpti = attainment — the whole compound is the subject being definedअपने अभीष्ट फल की प्राप्ति — नायक को जो फल अत्यन्त प्रिय है, उसका मिल जाना; यही समास परिभाषित होने वाला विषय है
bhavetis — take this as the defining 'is' optative used for a definition, not a wish: 'this is what counts as…'
evaprecisely that, and nothing short of itही — निश्चयपूर्वक इतना ही, इससे अधिक कुछ नहीं
phalāgamaḥis what is named phalāgama, 'the coming of the fruit' predicate — the sandhy-aṅga (juncture-limb) under definition; the || closes the quoted lineफलागम — यही वह सन्ध्यङ्ग है जिसका लक्षण किया जा रहा है; अन्त का || उद्धृत पंक्ति को समाप्त करता है
nijābhīṣṭa-phalāvāptiḥ — the winning of one's own longed-for result; eva — precisely that; phalāgamaḥ bhavet — is what is called phalāgama, 'the coming of the fruit'.
When the hero actually gains the very end he had been longing for — that, and only that, is the limb called phalāgama, 'the arrival of the fruit'. Rūpa has just given his own definition of phalāgama; now he clinches it with the sage Bharata's own words. The two agree: the coming-of-the-fruit is nothing more or less than getting the result one desired.
Why cited: Bharata's own words, quoted under the formula tathā ca munināpy uktam ('and thus it is also stated by the sage', Nāṭyaśāstra 19.11), adduced to back Rūpa's definition of phalāgama — the muni confirms that this juncture-limb is simply the gaining of one's desired result.
phalāgama, literally 'the coming of the fruit', is a sandhy-aṅga — a named limb of the dramatic junctures (sandhi) — marking the point where the hero at last secures the goal the whole plot has been driving toward. Here it is set beside the neighbouring limb niyatāpti ('assured attainment', defined just before as avighnena kārya-saṁsiddhi-niścayaḥ, 'the certainty that the aim will be accomplished without obstacle').
nija-abhīṣṭa-phala-avāptiḥ eva phalāgamaḥ bhavet.
nijābhīṣṭa-phalāvāptiḥ eva phalāgamaḥ bhavet।
The winning of the very result one had set one's heart on — precisely that, and nothing short of it, is what is called phalāgama, 'the coming of the fruit.'
A one-line citation of Bharata (Nāṭyaśāstra 19.11), adduced under tathā ca munināpy uktam to back Rūpa's definition of phalāgama — the sandhy-aṅga marking the hero's attainment of his desired goal, set beside its neighbour niyatāpti.
