L1definition
yatnas tu tat-phala-prāptāv autsukyena tu vartanam ||
yatnas tuyatna, for its part — now the second stage: the effort, striving hard once the goal has been taken up tu marks the turn from ārambha (the first stage) to the next in the listपरन्तु यत्न (नामक दूसरी अवस्था) तो — 'तु' शब्द से आरम्भ नामक पहली अवस्था से यहाँ अगली अवस्था की ओर मोड़ होता है
tat-phala-prāptautoward getting that fruit — the very result that ārambha first reached for locative of the aim: prāpti 'attainment' of tat-phala 'that fruit'; 'in the matter of obtaining it'उस (मुख्य) फल की प्राप्ति के विषय में — सप्तमी लक्ष्य को दिखाती है, अर्थात् उस फल के पाने के सम्बन्ध में
autsukyenawith eager longing — pushing on because he can hardly wait for it instrumental of manner: autsukya 'eagerness' is what the striving is charged withउत्सुकता (उत्कण्ठा) के साथ — तृतीया रीति को दिखाती है; इसी उत्कण्ठा से वह प्रयत्न भरा रहता है
tujust this — the eagerness is precisely what makes it yatna and not the bare ārambhaऔर (यहाँ 'तु' शब्द केवल पूर्ति के लिए तथा निश्चय के लिए है)
vartanamis his carrying-on — keeping at it, staying in motion toward the goal neut. nom., verbal noun as predicate: 'the proceeding [is yatna]'प्रवृत्त रहना ही (यत्न कहलाता है) — यह क्रियावाचक संज्ञा विधेय है, अर्थात् 'प्रवृत्ति ही यत्न है'
yatnaḥ tu — yatna, for its part; tat-phala-prāptau — toward attaining that fruit; autsukyena tu — with eager longing, just this; vartanam — is the carrying-on.
This is the second of the five stages, yatna, the effort. In the first stage, ārambha, the goal was only reached for. Now the characters press on to actually win it. Yatna is that pressing on — carrying the action forward toward getting the fruit. What marks it off from the mere start is the eagerness (autsukya): they can hardly wait for the result, and that longing drives the striving.
This half-line is the standard lakṣaṇa of yatna, the second of the five kāryāvasthās (the stages the play's central goal passes through) that were named in order in kārikā 41 (v013): ārambha, yatna, prāpty-āśā, niyatāpti, phalāgama. The lead-in first disposed of the first stage, ārambha ('budhair mukhya-phalodyoga ārambha iti kathyate' — the learned call the reaching-out for the chief fruit ārambha), with its illustration from the mukha-sandhi of the Lalita-Mādhava, where Rādhā and Mādhava's resolve for mutual union is the ārambha. The illustration of this yatna stage follows in the lead-in of the next unit (v015): in the pratimukha-sandhi, Rādhā's searching for Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa's effort to catch sight of Rādhā during the gandharva-dance is the yatna.
yatnaḥ tu tat-phala-prāptau autsukyena tu vartanam [asti]
But yatna, the effort, is the pressing-on toward attaining that fruit, carried forward with eager longing.
The lakṣaṇa (definition) of yatna, the second of the five kāryāvasthās named in kārikā 41; it follows ārambha, whose Lalita-Mādhava illustration the lead-in has just supplied.
