The kārya is the one goal the whole play is driving toward. As the play moves along, that goal passes through stages. There are five such stages (avasthā). Which stage the action is at depends on what the nāyaka (the hero) and the other characters are doing at that point.
avasthā is a technical nāṭya term: the five 'stages' the central action (kārya) passes through on its way from first attempt to full success. This half-verse is the standard lakṣaṇa of those five kāryāvasthās, introduced here by the lead-in 'athāvasthā—' ('now, the stages'). The next line names them in order.
